homemakers service and the other is the formation of a pickering and district welfare council on which the official and voluntary agencies including the service clubs and outside agencies work- j ing in the township would be i represented the purpose of the latter pro- ject would be to fill a much- needed gap here by co-ordinat- ing and planning welfare and j social work of all kinds now done by much overlapping both ideas were presented to the meeting by mrs f s hertz- i berg welfare chairman of the t branch who has been pressing for such a welfare council for i several years one of the first and most important features i would be the carrying out of a i social service survey this survey would provide factual knowledge of the over all conditions and needs of the population of the township and village w r mcadam assist ant commissioner of the ontario headquarters who was a special guest at the meeting and super vised the election of officers praised the local branch for its amazing progress and construc tive work done in so short a time mr mcadam stated that the pickering branch is by far a leading branch of the red cross in the province the work you have done and are still doing in four years is fantastic he said this branch does things that we seldom see done elsewhere mrs david crichton was re elected president together with other officers of the past year mrs hertzberg in her report noted that there have been many requests for homemaker service she said that during the year more than 60 families received assistance and others received advice and direction to proper authorities through the welfare committee assist ing her on this committee are mrs sherman scott mrs a penstone and mrs w bedell mrs crichton pointed out that during the past year four new chairmanships had been added they were first aid mrs l peters junior red cross mrs r rogers womens work mrs a tyas building g d hep ditch mrs tyas said the branch i now has seven sewing machines i
