316 without handicap the first teenage dance of the season will be held in the com munity hall on friday evening sept 26th the age limit for this dance is ten to fifteen fur ther particulars will be announ ced later in the week these dances are sponsored by the recreation committee and will be held through the winter two of our local boys have entered university this fall keith norton is unani mous choice to head the osh- awa riding for the progress ive conservatives at a party rally last week mr newman is shown here with the hon michael starr minister of la bor left and hon james n as pro gressive conservative candidate in the provincial riding of osh awa mr newman received the acclamation at a meeting held in whitby in which six other nominees declined to stand for the position mr newman married and the father of two children was five years a member of the pickering township council and for one year was reeve of the township in accepting the nomination he said that he hoped to meet personally the 70000 people liv ing in the oshawa riding he said that canada had recently witnessed a great political up heaval among the younger gen eration an upheaval he said which had put a conservative government in ottawa i believe we can expect the same shift in this- riding he told the 175 delegates to the con vention held in the town hall his optimism was shared also by the hon fleming of un- ionvilie attended miss june mor- the ontario county council learned on monday that 7655 dogs cats and other pets had received the antirabies vaccine in ontario county from the free clinics the report was filed with council by the department of agriculture which supplied the vaccine in a letter read in council at their opening meeting on mon day in whitby a department spokesman stated that the re sponse to the clinic had been excellent he noted that the total number to receive the shots did not include the totals of rama mara and thorah twps the writer also suggested that the county should not end its antirabies campaign with the clinic it was suggested that a strict dog control bylaw be en forced and that something be done to eliminate foxes in the county the letter had dinner on sunday with mr and mrs len gates mr and mrs len dart and family spent a day with friends at shelburne this past week a whole town was in mourn ing thursday afternoon while funeral services were held in the church of the holy trinity for elizabeth anne stratton flowers were banked beside the altar the communion rail and in all the windows tokens of sympathy in the passing of a popular young girl rev ronald e armstrong a close fricrd who conducted the service in the crowded church said it is not the custom of the anglican church to preach a funeral cration but rather to bring comfort to the bereaved family by themselves this tra gedy has gone beyond the fam ily it has gone beyond this town anne has gone before us should there be tears i think there should tears for us here was a person a witness of our church whose friendship extended beyond this town and across the world a loss all hu manity is suffering god has endowed her with a magnificent brain abiiiiy a loving character and personality we weep for ourselves because we loved her i find difficulty in expressing myself we were so proud of her she was one of the family t would remind you that we do not wilson then introduced the guest speakers mr and mrs adams of stouffville who told of their work at the evangeli cal mission of converted monks and priests at stouffville rev t fleetham then led a short singsong and the meeting clos ed with hymn 399 and the bene diction about 75 friends and relatives gathered at the irving mcavoy home and presented miss mary mcavoy and mr tully with a miscellaneous shower mr and mrs t jordan vis ited last tuesday with mr and mrs neil wiers at bradford mrs morgan pugh of uxbridge is visiting with her daughter mrs elmer wilson mr and mrs percy jones and family spent the weekend with mr and mrs elton hubbs at hillsburg friends are glad to know that mr orr graham is progressing nicely following his recent oper- service here for next week prayer meeting will be held at the home of mr and mrs allan michell on tuesday sept 30 at 8 pm everyone welcome gans wedding on saturday last place reeve morrison said that the matter of the establishment of a county museum had been men tioned on many occasions to him and he wondered if the county were taking any steps to start one he said that many items suit able for an historical museum had been offered on occasion he added that such a building might be located near the centre of the county rather than near the county offices in whitby reeve john mills of ajax said that the establishment of museums now appears to come under the direction of conser vation authorities with the re cent establishment of a conser vation authority in the eastern portion of the county he said it now appeared that the entire county would come under one aqthority or another he said that establishing a museum was a good idea and suggested that it might become a project for these authorities he added that such a museum should be started soon the longer these relics are kept around the easier they are lost he said warden cyril morley said that he had visited such a museum in ottawa this year a similar the home of mrs h malcolm assisted by mrs robt malcolm the devotional will be taken by mrs harden while the program will be in charge of mrs wannop all ladies wel come a family reception was held at the home of mr and mrs thos philip on thursday even ing for mr and mrs jordan freda philip about thirty- five were present and the happy couple received many useful and beautiful presents wms meeting the wms of st johns church met at the home of mrs norman burton on thursday afternoon sept 18 with the president in the chair the de votional service was led by mrs h malcolm assisted by mrs h miller it was announced by the secretary that mrs sturgess had accepted the invitation to speak at the autumn thankoffering meeting held in the church on october 9 arrangements were made for this meeting mrs h malcolm led in a discussion on the introductory chapter of the new study book after which mrs r malcolm gave a reading mrs burton mrs h barclay and mrs e campbell served refreshments mrs a j gray visited her brother and other friends at markham one day last week mr thos philip and daugh ter anna left malton airport on saturday for california mr and mrs preston smith of north dakota visited mr time but we are glad to hear she is now feeling some better mr and mrs jas wroe and daughter of bracebridge visited her parents mr and mrs t english on sunday mrs e carswell and daugh ter of oshawa mr and mrs jno hamilton also mr and mrs k bent and son of oshawa called on their mother mrs w hamilton on saturday mrs somerville and mrs phil ip returned to the formers home at uxbridge after spend ing the past week here believe rabies on wane the frequency of rabies in ontario and durham counties has dropped during the past month reported dr i j wool- sey of the health of animals division of the department of agriculture last week the august report shows 19 positive cases of rabies in dur ham and 16 in ontario county making a total of 35 these cases occurred most frequently among domestic animals such as sheep and cattle but there were also some foxes a comparable figure for july was not available but the doctor said august had a lower incidence the infected area extends from port hope northwest to uxbridge in on tario county said dr woolsey the province of ontario has been the most severely affected area indicated by the august fig ures which showed a total of 178 positive cases of rabies in the province quebec reported only three manitoba one and saskatchewan one greenwood mrs reid of port credit vis ited over the weekend with her brother frank webb and family mr and mrs
