nestled in a scenic wooded area near the hamlet of almira in markham township has been the topic of much discussion among conservation officials in recent years bruces mill one of the few active businesses of its type in york county is up for sale for a price the metro toronto and regional conservation as sociation have offered the pres ent owners more than 30000 for the mill the original home stead and 25 acres of property to date the offer has not been accepted our offer still stands said mr arthur latornell conserva tion field officer of woodbridge he said that no further progress in time be made into a museum for markham twp the present mill operator mr robt neil would be appointed caretaker of the park the original mill was erected in 1829 by mr casper shirk the property passed to the bruce family in 1843 and the business has been operated under the firm name of bruce bros since 1848 the present mill was erect ed in 1858 a portion of the orig inal building has been retained an adjoining storehouse was added in 1936 time and tide has taken its toll during the past century a large dam which blocked a stream to provide the mills water power was completely destroyed by hurricane hazel in 1951 on two previous occa sions it had been damaged but each time it was repaired now only the cement bulkheads re main water power ceased to be an efficient means for operating the mill when much of the bushland was cleared from the area and the river was transformed into a small stream from 1929 to 1950 both water power and elec tricity were used people today are in a collided with a cnr freight train at a level crossing on the lake wilcox sideroad 3 miles south of vandorf provincial police said the westbound motorcycle struck the northbound train six cars from the
