hull the stourtyiui tmwhe thcnity my w t958 tenth con markham turned into speedway says correspondent mothers are a harried lot with johnny playing circus on the top of the silo or executing a villain ous sentence in the barn wheth- er its robinson crusoe in the old swimming hole or fishing in the well holidays are a wor- ry to mothers but these pranks are kid stuff and they usually come through them with fly ing colors and a lot of happy memories that turn into the good old days by the time they have grandchildren if you not ice a look in the eyes of moth- ers that seem more like fear than worry it is not caused by the holiday pranks or imagina- tive summer games that every mother expects it is the maniac al drivers who have turned the 10th concession into a stock car track some of the antics wit nessed on this road by teenage drivers are enough to make your hair curl a few years ago we made a lot of noise and fin ally got a 30mile limit sign for cedar grove we might just as well have haggled for a coke for all the heed that is paid to it at the same time we found out that a license number re- ported to the police is not an effort entirely wasted the culprit cannot be fined on such a report but heaven help him if a cop spies him and finds his number on the citizen re cord so remember if you can get the kids out of the weaving path wipe the dust from your eyes and gather your tattered wits enough to get the number phone the police at once and keep on and on because if some thing isnt done about these fast drivers there will be a tragic ob ject lesson as sure as can be there may be a few who will claim that 1958 was the year the garden party was rained out but only a few most of the large audience that spotted the cedarena hillside on saturday july 25tb night ignored the spattering at intermission and stayed to see the whole show the show itself was good not excellent but good it was better in some spots than in others the omis sion from the programme of the popular williams brothers was a great disappointment but the del rio family provided ar exciting and skillful substitute ted rust had the front row watchers nearly hysterical with his clever ventriloquism and al bert marson billed as outstand ing was outstanding indeed in more ways than one penny nichols hit her stride in the second half of the programme and the visitors to elm grove who left early missed her at her doublejointed best the prettiest sight rom high on the hill was the rythmic moving about the stage as the enchant ed strings spun out their de lightful music jack ayre serves much more ovation than he receives somehow with no rehearsal he manages to de cipher the hieroglyphics handed to him by the performers on minute slips of crumpled paper some look like chinese laundry checks and accompany each act so that the whole show runs as though they had been re hearsing for a week it is a sur prising feat did you notice the pops and bangs on the town line on the fourth of july our american- canadians celebrating their na tional holiday with traditional fireworks and ice cream gallons of it bob dare son gary and don mcclennan had a weekend fish ing trip over the holiday lots of fishing talk when they came home but no fish at our house bible school will begin at the mennonite church on monday july 14th and will continue jo gooasssbbbappebcssabooat ma ma cm
