oxeye daisy and the hawk- weeds which include orange hawkweed and king devil are perennials that have spread to this country from europe and the field crops branch of the ontario department of agricul ture states that they are espe cially troublesome in pastures and hay fields which cannot be plowed and brought under a short crop rotation oxeye daisy a relative of the chrysanthemum has short thick root stalks that show great vi tality with many stems grow ing from one root the plant grows from six inches to three that grows from 12 to 18 inches high this weed is a real prob lem in permanent pastures in northern ontario king devil is troublesome mainly in eastern ontario it is much like orange hawk weed but may be distinguished by its small yellow flowers all three weeds are easily kill ed by cultivation infested hay and pasture fields should be plowed if possible and put un der a short rotation of crops chemical weed killers should be used on rocky or hilly pastures that cannot be plowed the cur rent years growth may be kill ed by one application of 8 oz of 24d acid per acre in late july or early september to kill the roots however several treat ments of 16 oz of 24d per acre may be required it should be remembered that these rates of 24d will also kill clovers and alfalfa although the grasses will be unharmed it is practical to spray these weeds therefore only when they are present in pure or nearly pure all sunday schools to help in sending representatives to the world convention of sunday schools at tokyo and that dona tions be sent to rev harold frid toronto mr 1955 ss20 learned that their teacher mrs mary barkey would have to leave teaching it was a sad bit of news for both parents and teachers for mrs barkey had been in cedar grove since 1953 and we had all grown very fond of her we had to consider however the difficulties of our new teacher mrs marion wilson coming into a new school at such a busy lime not only were there the usual midyear reports to make but the christmas concert was high on the list too wo could try to imagine but few could realiie what a chore it was to plan and guide a new group of children through a christmas concert but mrs wilson took it in her stride and did a won derful job since then she has applied the same enthusiasm and understanding to both tier at the school and the adjust ments of our two hungarian children problems seem to bo challenging to mrs wilson and her cooperation when any child needs individual attention is something every parent has been able to rely upon between mrs barkey and mrs wilson both of whom demand a high teaching standard cedar tjrove was able to send an excellent grade eight into high school last year now we announce with great regret that- mrs wilson is resigning this year and this farewell will be a hard one for both the child ren and their parents it will be hard for mrs wilson too because after two sessions of teaching in cedar grove she has come to regard ss20 as her school there is good news to accom pany the bad however and we are happy to be able to report that beginning in september we will welcome back again mrs mary barkey in a way mrs barkey has noter really left there has never been a concert in cedar grove which she has missed she has never wavered in her interest in the pupils she had taught and we hope when she returns it will be with a feeling of renewing an old ana arm friendship the community club meeting held on monday evening at the good looking shoes that fit good and feel good shoes in sizes and styles to please every member of the
