york county hospital solicitor j d lucas has in formed the members of mark- ham twp council that a muni cipality has no authority to license day nurseries the mat- ter falls under the complete jurisdiction of the province mr lucas cited the day nurseries act as provincial legislation covering the operation of a day nursery on a motion moved by dep uty reeve dean and seconded by councillor watson council re fused to install a 2000 gallon gas storage tank on his prop erty councillor mumberson had opposed the application until such time as council had ascer tained the feelings of the other people in the community regard ing the proposed installation mr mumberson expressed con cern that the property might be come a large truck depot the property in question is also not zoned as commercial the fire committee council lors watson and mumberson will arrange a meeting with richmond hill to discuss the towns proposed new may 1st fire agreement richmond hill on that date raised the standby fee from 30000 to 100000 and the cost of fighting individual fires from 5000 to 12500 by caroline edwards a very generous gift of six hospital beds at a cost of over s50000 from the north york police association is being given to yprk county hospital pos sibly no other group of people have the opportunity to appre ciate the service given by the hospital and to cooperate so wholeheartedly in that service where accidents of various kinds are concerned through their thoughtfulness an incubator for the nursery was donated last year both the incubator and the beds were badly needed and the j board are very grateful to the north york police association for these kind donations concern is being felt in hos pital and other circles that some of our citizens are looking upon the forthcoming hospital insur ance plan as a cureall for hos pital problems and that the re sponsibility of the individual community for its hospital will be greatly lessened if not ended entirely hospital authorities are quick to point out that such is by no means the case individ ual hospitals throughout the province do and will continue to count very heavily on the active support of their own citi zens the provincial government as one hospital official said recent ly has become a friendly part ner with hospitals in providing assistance towards solving prob lems which cannot be met en tirely at the local level in speaking of this increased par ticipation spokesmen for the ontario hospital services com mission have gone on record on numerous occasions in point ing out that loca hospital aut onomy in hcpital operation is to be preserved and encouraged the hospitals of ontario have reached a point where the stand ard of their facilities arid quality of care provided rank with the best anywhere this came about to a large extent through the voluntary effort of hospital boards and local citizens it is a tribute to their initiative and independence the fact that the responsibility for hospital oper ation is still vested in the com munity means that any expan sion of existing facilities re mains a voluntary local respon sibility it is in this area where community support is most vi tal there is little doubt that the institution of the hospital in surance plan will result event ually in some increase in de mand for hospital services here too the cooperation and assist ance of every individual will be necessary to eliminate any pos sible misuse of available hos pital space unnecessary use of facilities would prove detriment al to those persons in greater need of active hospital treat ment this places a responsi bility on all concerned to ensure that it does not happen it is these thoughts which should be given serious consid eration by everyone as york county
