ser vice is planned for the stouff- ville united church this coming sunday when rev douglas da vis minister here for the past seventeen years will mark forty years in the ministry he will v takeas his subject his exper iences over these forty years this june 195s is further in june 1918 mr davis mar ried macil boyce of palgrave and the couple came to toronto where he completed his studies at victoria college he received special ordination in june 191s and was received into full con nection in 1921 rev douglas davis has com pleted a very full forty years in unique in the history of this the ministry he has been con- local minister since on june 25th rev and mrs davis will celebrate their 40th wedding an niversary a brief message will be ex pressed on behalf of the congre gation on sunday by mr fred campbell and the choir will render special musical selec tions the service will also be an eventful one for the local choir as on this occasion they will have new gowns dedicated rev douglas davis was born at southsea portsmouth eng land in 1891 and came to can ada in august of 1907 he re ceived his early education at st johns church school in eng land after several years farm ing in the bolton district mr davis was recommended as a candidate for the ministry by the official board of the bolton united church and entered al bert college belleville in 1914 he spent two years as a proba tioner in the parry sound dis trict with nine appointments and later to the trout creek circuit with three appointments nected with four presbyteries during this time and in each case has served as chairman his latest appointment to this high office came only last week when he was elected chairman of the new york presbytery in addition to his many church duties he fownd tune to act as business manager of the north york camp ahshunyoong and continued to give leadership to the camp for fyentythree years prior to coming to stouffville in 1941 rev mr davis served the pastorates of smooth rock falls and king city he was a commissioner to general coun cil in 1927 and again in 1946 during his seventeen years in stouffville rev mr davis has experienced a great growth in his congregation in 1950 a cam paign for an addition to the church was successfully carried through providing church par lours vestry choir rooms and nursery downstairs he has been active in service club work and many other community better ment projects stores open at night next tuesday stores in stouffville will be open next tuesday evening until 10 oclock they will also be open as usual until 10 on committee of the local businessmens association com posed of messrs john mathew- son glenn ratcliff and harold spoftord has been named by the association to bring in a report on all the lands presently available for down town park ing to present the cost of pav ing such sites to provide electric lights and signs mr ted topping president of the local association told the recent merchants meeting of his findings regarding nearby shopping centres and parking in other communities mr raxlin voiced the opinion that shoppers could not be induced to walk too far but mr topping stated that shoppers in oshawa walk far ther than those using present parking facilities in stouffville if they happen to park on the outside at the motor city cen tre mr topping said that he be lieved the council would be im proving matters when their new parking bylaw comes into force the lots should be properly laid out for parking added miss simons employers and employees are some of the biggest offend ers in taking up the good park ing space said mr hendricks weve got to have the parking to attract business and we might help our lots at the arena and church by paving and light ing he added mr ken wagg suggested that the space behind the local thea tre might be levelled up and surfaced theres no use direct ing them into mud fields said miss simons the merchants were advised by mr wagg that council is pre paring to install two of the new- type fluorescent lights on main street and when their improve ment has been viewed a com mittee will visit council to dis cuss the possibility of having failed to provide the necessities of life for three resi dents of their nursing home he expressed his personal indigna tion at the treatment the old people had received the charges were laid follow ing the death on march 9 of mrs hetta mae willson 81 two other residents mrs barbara jacques 75 and charles wilson 75 were transferred to york county hospital the megintys entered a plea of not guilty their defense counsel david coon asked for dismissal of the three charges on the grounds that the crown had failed to establish its case crown attorney arleigh arm strong argued that a conviction should be brought against the pair on the charge of failing to provide the necessities of life for mrs barbara jacques he said she would have starved to death if the conditions at the endangered or that health is or likely to be permanently injured by the neglect the injury or danger to health must result directly from the failure to provide the ne cessities of life inability to provide has been recognized as a lawful excuse parliament did not in tend to punish a man for fail ing to do the impossible applying these principles to the present case the accused contracted to care foe these sen ile people knowing they were out of their minds physically helpless unable to control their bowels and bladders and too crippled to be capable of move ment they undertook this re sponsibility knowing that they could not carry out these du ties magistrate hollinrake contin ued the place i cannot call it a home they established in stouffville was broken down with paper and plaster falling from the walls there was in adequate heating improper toil et facilities no proper equip ment for the immense amount of laundering to be done and unsanitary conditions for- the preparation of food these senile people required hospital care constant attention in changing their bedding and clothes attendants to move them proper food and drugs to quiet their restless minds and school and plans to enter the teaching profession following further study markham twp police seek to arbitrate wages with council the police association repre senting markham township po lice advised markham council on monday that they were plac ing the matter of their wage dis pute with the township before arbitration they requested that council appoint an arbitrator stating that they had already done so the police had asked for a s100 pay increase for each man in november 1957 at that time council had declared its inten tion on behalf of the taxpayers to hold the line in salaries of employees and no increases were made deputyreeve dean has met with the police several times and is presently preparing a re port on all salaries of township employees which he will pre sent at the next meeting of council in view of this reeve clark stated that council would take no action at present as they wished time for consideration it was understood that vaughan township council has begun ar bitration oper ated as a community centre the group stated that they had arranged an option on five acres of land on the 4th concession at 1000 an acre the land has 400 ft frontage on the 4th and is 600 ft deep under the community centre acl the government grant of 25o would be forthcoming leav ing a balance of 3750 to be paid it was disclosed by clerk crisp that receipts from lot fees in the new cachet country club subdivision now amount ed to 7000 and the deputation suggested that these funds be used to pay the balance a resolution was carried auth orizing that the 3750 be paid from this fund which
