advertisement 1 am takink th opportunity at the time ot the annual muni cipal elections of reporting to you on the state of affairs in pickering township member5 of council gave their reports at the nomination meeting last friday evening but i thought that for those who were unable to attend a synopsis might be of interest to you the most important action taken during th past year was of course that taken in con nection with the industrial de velopment in the township during the year we were suc cessful in inducing large in dustry to purchase 850 acres within our industrial area and the same industry optioned t further 300 acre it la anti cipated that plans to build will be announced in th new year by the industry a you cbt probamy heard tho township has agreed to proceed with 4 water plant as eoon a th industrys plans are announced the water plant originally wilt be for the use of industry but as residential areas are devel oped water will be made arall- able to those portions of our township which most urgently require this serrlce while discussing industry for our township it will be of interest to the residents of the mora northerly parts of the town ship that we hat one medium slsed industry looking over a sits in that area if ttls in dustry decides to locate a water system will be required in this area but the cost will not be great doe to the abund ance of ground water is the general area you will hare lead of the aetltltles of the reoreation committee this year and i am pleased to tel you that the ground work has been laid for a recreational program in fu ture years the health unit which yon have heard about for several years came into existence this year and we should all be proud of this fact since leader ship for the unit has been given by pickering councils for the past several years the health unit will provide wider public health services tor all and will not cost us additional money it would be amiss of me not to recognize the con scientious service given to our township in the past by dr xels tomllnson who retired at his own request at the begin ning of this year during the past year real progress has heen made with our township and county roads plans have been laid for an extensive surfacing pro gram for 1958 a fulltime fire chief was employed during the past year and a new are area established in the south east part of the township our assessment increased as of september 30th by about of a million dollars and this figure should increase to at least one million dollars by the years end building permits in the amount of 3600000 have been issued to date as a result of fridays nomination meeting there will be a contest for the reeves post for the deputyreeves post for councillor in ward 3 all other council positions having been filled by acclama tion there will as ft result of the contest for reeve and deputyreeve be an opportun ity for all ratepayers in the township to vote and i sin cerely ask you to do so on saturday next the hours are between 10 and 6 on saturday december 7th and i urge you to vote i will be a candidate for the office of reeve this year and i respectfully request your sup port certain inferences con cerning myself and another candidate have recently heen made the mccarthy tech nique and i bolleve that when i answer by saying that i have never used any munici pal office to which i have been elected for personal gain or profit that the inferences have been answered to everyones satisfaction the smear cam paign has never bcon success ful in this municipality and i know will not
