ftittl the stourtyiue twhjhf thmirf korenfcar 2t 57 to iearv ok teach did the russian hocke7 team eotc to canada to learn or to teach although i was not one of the privileged 14000 persons in attendance at the gardens on fridar night it was plainly tisible on my tv set that our professional clubs might take a fevr pointers from our moscow visitor as far as im concerned the european rules adopted by both the russian team and the whitby club for the muchpublicised exhibition tilt are in many respects the right rules the absence of mid- ice boarding slashing and highsticking was quite noticeable tht was a fharp contrast to the rough and rugged schmozzles that occur in many of our pro games the sportsmanlike conduct of th rus club both before and after the contest left many critics openmouthed and redfaced i do not intend to take anything away from the whitby team they put up an equally fn performance and will be excellent representatives for canada at oslo next spring lets enforce it we noted with interest one of the rules written into the regulations of the north york minor hockey league under governor mr geo haskett of newmarket it reads players will be suspended for rough play fighting and bad language whether this is a new rule in minor hockey im not sure but if it is im for it if it has been a rule in previous years then i would say that it should be more strictly enforced we must admit that it may be difficult to enforce such a ruling when it conies to the terminology of rough play but it certainly doesnt take any modernday einstein to rule on fighting or bad language a one- or twogame suspension for such occur rences especially at playoff time would rapidly break the offenders of such habits jrust cam a halt following this weeks issue in local arena brings surge of comment stouffville ont mr sports editor stouffville tribune stouffville ont dear sir through space on your page i would like to describe my in terpretation of saturday night public skating in the stouffville arena you step into an atmosphere of rock roll while putting on your skates one is subjected to shocking language in the dress ing room after stepping on the ice you take one stroke and are tripped ignoring the jazzy mu sic you try to skate half way around you are confronted by six teenagers standing in the way of others circling around two patches of bare cement and zigzagging between touchtag gers beginners etc you finally make one complete circuit you are now ready to go home its almost impossible to get fifty cents worth of skating is wednesday afternoon child rens day should we not have an age limit to keep out a big but would like to suggest that this jive music can only be appreciated by a few on a dance floor the composers of such music will admit that it never was written or intended for the skating arena i am sure that strauss would be as frus trated as we are at attempting to skate to such rhythm in conclusion it seems to me that you have one of two choices to make you could continue in your present rut catering to a few roudy individuals who are turning your arena into a public brawling place this no doubt is the easier choice for it re quires no thought no effort no work and it will continue to grow the second choice however is for you to accept and under stand the feelings and advice of the public in this matter realiz ing that the reputation of our town and arena is at stake if you take immediate action to get rid of these disturbing teen agers as is done in surround ing arenas and obtain music part of the children should we intended for skating i feel sure not have discipline do we want skating or dancing in our local arena will we make it a place of clean recreation or just a teenage hangout a fedup skater manager and board of directors of the stouffvlle arena gentlemen i hope you read the articles which appeared in last weeks tribune regarding the situa tion which has developed in the arena for which you are re sponsible perhaps this sounds like very forceful language however you are the men in authority and in the position to bring about a desired change that you will gain the respect and admiration of both old and young in this town further more i venture to say i that your crowds will increase and once again everyone will feel it profitable to spend an even ing of pleasure skating in they reduced the amount by 50 no further appeal was made by selkirk and the time for same has now elapsed solicitor lucas who was at the meeting stated he had no alternative but to pay the amount owing selkirk stated the decisions of mr lucas had not always been favorable to him and that he was advised by two solicitors that where a property was as sessed in error that it was open to appeal without the lapse of time being considered affer some fortyfive minutes of dispute during which selkirk twice reminded the clerk that it was possible to recover the taxes in the course of law reeve clark closed the matter by declaring council was not the proper body to deal with any matter except the tax bill for 1957 solicitor lucas said mr selkirk was stating to council that lie would take any means available to have the court de clare non responsibility for the taxes of 1055 and 56 and at the same time he was asking for an extension of the present agreement council had agreed to the ex tension but had added several conditions one of which was n new bond solicitor lucas said he wished this as the bond pro vided on two previous occasions had defaulted another condition was that all arrears of taxes were to be paid selkirk claimed that council only required to extend the per iod of time and no other condi tions should be requested garbage disposal the township of markham council have been looking for a new place for garbage disposal an application of markham sand gravel to utilize the space made by removal of gravel was refused by metro authority mrs james staved it might be
