of toronto was a caller on relatives one day last week we understand that the farm belonging to the pegg estate has been sold to a city man mr lew sanderson of toronto i mr and mrs frank cooper a wellknown and highly respected claremont couple marked their 85th birthdays last week mar ried in 1902 they will celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary in the fall mr coopers entire life has centered around the village of claremont he is the son of the late mr and mrs geo cooper his father farmed the property now owned by mr wm benson he also operated a butcher shop for a short time at the four cor ners mrs cooper is the daugh ter of the late richard ward and elizabeth evans of balsam mr cooper has always been a lover of horses at the early age of nine years he handled a team on a single plow on his fathers farm he later learned the blacksmiths trade and ap prenticed for three years at ash- burn manchester and sonya like the majority of boys back in the late 1800s he obtained very little schooling he attend ed only in the winter time and gained a basic knowledge of reading writing and arithmetic such an education was all right in those days but wouldnt do today he admits mr cooper can vividly describe the road and weather conditions that pre vailed during his boyhood days we didnt have any buses to take us to school then he said with a shake of his head i can them he community house parties were very popu lar mr cooper recalls how the young people would gather at their sunday school parties and fill the hall to capacity young people today arent satisfied with this type of enter tainment he said theyre al ways looking for something new and different but cant find it mr cooper agrees that the auto mobile and summer cottage have been mainly responsible for much of the change i can re member when the methodist church would be filled to the doors every sunday evening he related now its hard to get more than two dozen people out in recalling many of the changes around the district mr cooper noted the terrific in crease in the value of property my father purchased his farm west of the village for only 4500 he said its worth a good deal more now mr cooper was 24 years old when he entered the black smiths trade i always liked horses he admitted he recall ed how he would purchase a large number of horses and re sell them to local and longdis tance buyers he said that a good horse would sell as high as 250 or 300 he noted rather re luctantly that there was little demand lor good work horses now some farmers dont keep any he said shoeing a horse was an art for mr cooper for stallions mr cooper would make his own horseshoes in his main street shop a stallion completely shod would cost 200 he said that i with two helpers he could shoe four stallions a day there were three other blacksmith shops in claremont ever since his youth mr coo per has known hard work he recalled how he would walk more than two miles a day to the bush and cut wood for 25c per day he noted that s1s00 per month was considered top wages but the average man would earn around 1300 on saturday evening mr and mrs cooper were the honoured guests at the home of their daughter
