the season in tor onto last saturday it was a tough game the score was tied most of the time until the end when the port perry team got ahead of us and with only a minute and a half to play we couldnt quite catch up again the game ended 3633 for port perry stouffville and burks falls were to have played off earlier but these teams are so far apart that a special agreement was made to play in toronto and eliminate two teams at once as there were four teams to play off it was agreed before the game began that should stouft ville or burks falls lose and the other win the loser should have the georgian bay championship and the other should have a try at the ontario championship so stouffville is the holder for a second year of the georgian bay championship were proud of our girls grade 13 started writing exams wednesday and the rest of us begin today so possibly there will be no column next week no one strong enough to hold a pen anymore we hope it wont be that bad caroline ogilvy probation helps both old and young offenders this is the second in a series of articles on probation work prepared by probation officer william outerbridge in his annual report to york county councll when a child under 16 appears before the court and is convicted of a delinquency one of the alternative methods of disposition is probation under this disposition the child re turns to the community under supervision of the probation officer for a certain specified period of time during this time the child must abide by certain rules of probation which are laid down by the court he is subject to supervision and counceiling by the probation officer the purpose of this method of disposition under law is to give the probation officer a chance to get to know the child and to attempt in any way possible to prevent further out breaks of delinquency during 1956 a total of 25 juveniles were placed on proba tion to this court for offences ranging from minor breaches of municipal statutes through break entry and theft to more serious offences such as delin quency as a result of arson and wounding this has involved a varying degree of supervision depending on the seriousness of the offence and the severity of the social problem underlying the delinquency itself of this number eight have successfully completed their probation with out further offences four have been returned to court for further offences or breach of rules of probation and thirteen remain under probation super vision as of january 1 1957 for the purpose of acquaint ing your honour of all the social circumstances of those who have appeared before the court a total of 28 presentence reports and social histories have been prepared the importance of these reports cannot be over estimated as they help place before your honour a total picture of the child who appears before the court when further intensive assessment has been required by a psychiatrist we have been able to use the ser vices of dr j d atcheson d psych of the metropolitan tor onto juvenile court if mental illness or serious emotional dis turbance has been suspected of being a contributing factor to the delinquency probation adult certain sections of the crim inal code and provincial sta tutes are heard in family court when they apply to matters be tween husband and wife these statutes enable the judge to use probation supervision where this seems to be indicated of the 117 cases appearing before the court in 1956 nine adults were placed under this super vision four of these were car ried over from 1955 these cases have involved charges of assault by husband or wife corrupting children in the home contribut ing to delinquency of children as well as failing to provide for ones dependents although the number of these cases has not been great the effect of proba tion supervision has had in most cases a salutary result in help ing the offender realize tnat certain behaviour cannot be con doned and that further he or she has certain responsibilities under law which must be assum ed to be continued next week ballantrae mrs patcrson we find that the past week has been an eventful one be ginning with the meeting of against splitting the school area and still another group wishese one large school the stourryllil tutume throby nurch u 1957 p 13 to which church did the apostles belong i here is much unnecessary confusion about the beginning of the christian church the early new testament church to which the apostles be longed much of this confusion is rooted in the fact that some segments of christianity in the twentieth century have claimed the early new testa ment church as their own exclusive ancestry- jn so do ing there has inevitably been distortion in presenting the picture of the early church the fact is the early church did not have various faiths and denomina tions it was simply com posed of those who came to believe in the risen saviour jesus christ though their faith in christ they knew that they would be srved from the wrath of cod the bible says that the lord added to the church daily such as should bo saved acts 2 17 biblebelieving christians today do not maintain that the church is made up of just one sect or denomination the basis of membership in the church has not changed since the first century the church is still composed of all those who believe in jesus christ as saviour it is still made up of all those who are saved there is close fellowship today among biblebelieving christians in numerous pro testant groups just as there was close fellowship anions the various groups of believ ers in the days of the apos tles among these believers the bible has always stood as the supreme authority in spiritual matters through the bible message of salvation these christian believers have come to know a newness of life whichmvas known to the apostles ard to all believers of their day the bible says that if any man be in christ he is a rcw creature old things are passed away behold all things are become new ii corinthians 3 17 if you would like to krc 1 move about the church tl great fellowship of those whv believe on jesus christ as saviour you will want to have a pamphlet which has been prepared for your bene fit you may have it free of charge if you fill in and mail the following the national asciat5j of evangelicals box 7411 washington a d c please this group feels that children have a better education being taught by one teacher per grade reeve legge felt that if these groups would get together and como up with a solution among themselves a lot of time could be saved he suggested that the trustees of our school board call another ratepayers meet ing when the trustees receive tho petition which is in tho hands of tho township clerk mrs horton
