court the greftter proportion of the inaugural session of stouffville municipal council was given ever to the making of appoint ments of various officers and officials for 1957 there will be no change in the personnel of the stouffville community cen tre board with the exception of the two council members those named to the 1957 board are dr s s ball mrs les wilson mrs bert tail ken wagg and ted cadieux councillor gar leh man and deputyreqve burk mrs e sisco was named as a member of the local library board for a term of three years harry vaneeno was named road supt and weed inspector and henry ogden was returned as building inspector these ap pointments are made by bylaw there were some changes in the matter of councils standing committees for the years and resulted as follows roads and walks committee councillors el gin wagg and gar lehman pro perty and police councillor laushway and deputyreeve burk bylaws administration and finance deputyreeve burk end councillor laushway the first named in each instance will act as chairman salary increase asked constable frank edwards in his written report from the po lice department stated that this branch of the municipal service would be brought up to date and asked council for the neces sary fding equipment in addi tion a request was made for an increase in the salaries of the two local officers council agreed that these matters garbage for a municipality of 12000 persons would cost 55000 to erect in cluding the cost of land how ever the annual cost of opera tion was estimated at 10 to 50000 which included cost of garbage collection the engi neers stated that such an estab lishment should be located in the southwest part of the town ship and would require a ten- acre site the incinerator would eon- sume two tons of garbage an hour and would require three to four men to operate a sug- gestion was made that markham might combine with richmond hill and vaughan in such an undertaking but no action was taken by markham council arena business brisk this year business at the stouffville arena is the best this year it has been for several seasons night bookings are almost com pletely sold out until next march two large athletic associations have taken all the ice time on saturdays with exception of the evenings beginning as early as 7 am while all local teams are be ing accommodated the few new arenas erected in and around toronto cannot begin to take care of the tremendous growth in population there and the local company is pleased to be receiv ing a good share of this over flow business shareholders in the local arena company have continually voted to complete the paying off of the mortgage against the con cern before paying any divi dends at a meeting of the di rectors of the company last week an additional 3500 was paid from the debt 175000 in supplies sent to austria by um churches asked bus line on bayview a representative of the new market bus lines appeared be fore markham township coun cil on monday requesting coun cil support in their application to the provincial highways lic ensing board for the right to operate a bus line from sutton to toronto via the markham- whitchurch townline and south down bayview it was stated that all munici palities including gwillimbury whitchurch and mt albert had so far been favorable but so licitor j d lucas informed ttc agree ment since it was revealed that the commission is endeavoring to alter their service on yonge street planning board a tie vote resulted for the appointment of a member of the markham township plan ning board j gamble who re signed to run for a seat on council councillors kathleen james and mumberson proposed exreeve alt lemasurier for the post and deputyreeve dea con and councillor cosburn the reappointment of mr gamble reeve clarke gave his support to the resolution for mr le masurier the exreeve appoint ment is for a period of three years other members are c j laurin reappointed for one year h sissons f brumwell and h brennan first markham traffic court has full schedule the first markham township traffic court was held in the mu nicipal chambers buttonville on wednesday the courtroom was filled to capacity by close to 200 violators of the highway traffic act liquor control act and local bylaws magistrate o s hollinrake presided rev a c huston of the vic toria square united church pro nounced the dedicatory prayer reeve wm clarke of markham township reeve j v fry of markham village and major lex mckenzie mpp of north york spoke briefly magistrate hollinrake advised those present that the traffic court was not held as a means to collect revenue but to gain the cooperation- of the motor ing public in an effort to prevent accidents col hollinrake point ed out that the police were co operating 100 percent he stress ed the fact that the police de partments were not issuing summonses to collect money but to make drivers aware of their responsibilities ice active in rural area over weekend thieves entered the property of the late dr w e mckinley 5th concession markham some time during the early hours of friday morning and stole ap proximately 200 hens from the chicken house the poultry farm is operated by mr and mrs wm macgimsey they keep more than 1000 hens tire tracks in an adjoining property lead police to believe that the thieves placed the hens in bags or crates and carried them to the waiting vehicle the loss is estimated at 300 the theft was discovered around six oclock on friday morning when the owner went out to york presbytery appoints executive whitchurch township council opened the 1957 municipal year with an inaugural dinner at the vandorf hall on wednesday night of this week guests at the dinner included all township offi cials employees the press and ladies the council installation ceremony was performed at this gettogether tonight council will meet again to conduct regu lar business gigantic church markham on tuesday of this week the i first session opened with the j administration of the holy com- munion rev george thomas 1 presided assisted by the rev dr e e long and the rev dr a d matheson the new 1 presbytery duly constituted a t nominating committee was ap- pointed to bring in a list of officers end conveners of com- mittees during this period fra- j tcrnal greetings were brought by dr long representing the moderator and the general council of the united church of canada dr matheson presi dent of the toronto conference rev xoble hatton and rev g e ashford chairman of the two i presbyteries from which the new presbytery was formed greetings were brought on behalf of the anglican church by the right rev g b snell j sufteran bishop and the rev i john forbes moderator of the i toronto east presbytery of the i presbyterian church mrs m r mckay president i of the toronto conference wo- 1 mans association and mrs g i e k howe president of the conference womans in toronto rev george thomas of mark ham asked for a change of pas toral relations to take effect june 30 1957 the growth of population in markham necessi tates a readjustment of the work with cedar grove andj other arrangements must be i made in the near future for this charge a new pastoral charge is being constituted north east o richmond hill to be known as st matthews york presby tery comprises 27 pastoral char- j ges with 57 preaching places there are 31 ministers active and retired and together with an equal number of lay rep- rcsentatives giving a court of 64 members there was a
