weeks and weeks the coughing j may be accompanied by vomit ing resulting in loss of food and loss of weight it may then be necessary to give the child fre quent light meals whooping cough is very contagious and a frequent complication is pneu monia whenever whooping cough is suspected the family physician should be called im mediately isolation the isolation period for the disease is twentyone days from i j i the onset of the disease if other children in the family un der twelve years of age have not had whooping cough they are quarantined for the same period of isolation of the pa- tient the infection spread by direct contact usually takes about ten days to develop but may take longer protection the injections to prevent whooping cough are usually given in combination with diph- theria and tetanus toxoid they should be given any time after three months of age with boost- ers during the second and third j years this provides protection in over 80 of children in the remaining 20 if the disease is contracted it is usually a milder case j the above information is pub- lished in pamphlet form by the j department of national health land welfare and may be ob- tained at your
