champions crowned on the aports front here at home the red sox retained the trlcounty league honors by ousting both orluia and sunderland in thrilling playoff duel the battonvllle sluggers worked their way into the markham twp eofball finals only to be beaten out by thornhhl a battling midget team clouted its way into the oba semifinals but fell apart in the final game of the series and lost out to caledonia the local girls team were knocked out in the first round of the p1vsd playdownj but aurprlsed their followers with a beadstip showing over at claremont mount zlon com pleted the softball crown aurora downed newmarket to win the local soccer championship here and there all over the district local teams made bids for group and provincial recognition although none were able to win an ontario crown many did come close they no doubt will have their eyes glued on the coveted prize when another summer rolls around dying out is the markham township softbal league dying a slow death following the wlndup of the playoffs a few weeks ago it would appear that the organization is drawing its last breath a few years ago the markham softball circuit was a flourishing group comprising some excellent teams and colorful players now the group has been cut down to a mere four clubs and one of these buttonvllle has threatened withdrawal the local league faces a pretty grim outlook for another season new market in their initial venture in the group didnt fare too well and markham one of the leagues top drawing cards failed to qualify for playoff competition this year the markham league like other softball organizations ha3 been plagued in recent years by oa sa intervention these interruptions can to a large extent lie blamed for the lack of interest in the group this summer buttonvllle waited more than six weeks for thornhhl and newmarket to complete their provincial playoff game3 before the local semifinals and finals could be completed consequently the teams played only to empty stands and in nearfreezing temperatures as far as this writer is concerned the entries in the markham twp circuit use the local group only as a conditioner for provincial competition when the ontario playoffs start the local league might just as well fold up its a shame that such a flourishing organization should meet such a fate here and there members of the local red sox baseball club are sporting their new leather jackets obtained through teds mens wear stouffville pine orchard were recently crowned winners on the mount albert community softball league doug card practice at the arena on thursday night the largest crowds since the opening of the arena have been enjoying saturday night public skating here bruce middleton netmlnder with the unionville jets suffered a 5stitch gash on his chin here thursday night while guarding the net in the clipper practice a keai comeback television appears to be haying little effect on the saturday night public skating crowds at the stouffville arena the at tendance has passed all expectations being bettered only when the arena was first opened a number of years ago what is the reason for the sudden upsurge the turn toward this sport was quite noticeable last winter when attendance figures showed an increase over the previous season but this years opening crowds are still larger it could be possible that the television novelty has worn off at least for the teenage folk and this trend may continue which would be all for the good as far as local sports attractions are concerned the public skating en thusiasm is not only noticeable in stouffville other towns such as aurora newmarket richmond hill bowmanville etc report equally good turnouts oha meeting at barrie on wed last season the oha in augurated a series of district meetings and these proved quite popular among hockey clubs on account of popular demand the oha is repeating them again this season it was felt that con siderable
