McKnight and Mr. and Mrs. McKnight of Alliston took a motor trip to Hamilton, St. Catharines and Niag ara during the past week, Pte, Marshall Prince returned to town on Saturday evening after nobly doing his bit for the great cause of liberty and free- dom, Pte, Prince went oversess with construction battalion, He was wounded in the leg and amputation of the limb was found necessary. Marshall, like all re- turned men, is very glad to be at home safe again and glad also to have been able to do his share in the great struggle. The Cookstown Fair The Cookstown Fair last week was fairly well attended considering the disagreeable morning which prevented a good number of people from being present. The exhibits in the hall and the stock were sbout as usual 'The horse racing was somewhat marred by an accident with W. Hughes' horse. Mr. Hughes, who was driving it, was unfor- tunate enough to have his leg broken in three places. The races resulted as follows:-- Farmers' Trot: 1 Chas. Hounsome, 2 Thorpe, '8 Hughes. 2.50 Trot: 1 Thorpe, 2 W. Hounsome, 3 Hughes. 'The concert was well attended, the hall being filled to the doors. The programme was up to the mark in every way and was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone present. 'The'Women's Institute took in by tagging $90.42 and by the booth and donations, $61.00, making a total of $151.42. Killed by Shell Explosion Mrs W. T. McMaster has received a letter from the Director of Records, Ottawa, | ating forth the circumstunces of the death of her son, Corp. The Late Pte. Alex. Gooch that the late Pte. Alex Gooch wos killed in action on Aug. 28th Pte. Gooch was an Englishman by birth und came out to this country about six years ago. After coming to Canada he lived on the farm of Fred Grose and also with Ed. Lewis, being with the latter sbout four years. During his stay as a resident of this com- munity he had won » host of friends. He was of a cheery disposition, His upright ness in all his dealings was « mark of bis character.
