Doll" to be at the Grand, Barrie, next Monday, September 23. at all these ina notices will make these arrears ends Sept, 30 sent Mail and Empire, Sept, 10) Very few musical comedies contain a plot worthy of the name which can carry ond through a maze of music and convey an intelligent idea of the prevailing theme, but "Che Million Dollar Doll," which open- ed at the Grand last night is one of the exceptions. Louis Weslyn when penning his latest musical comedy must have determine that the public should never at any time have a hazy idea of his intentions. The plot around which "The Million Dollar Doll" centres treats of the guardian who invests the fortune of the beautiful young girl under his care in a smoke consumer which ends in smoke, and to retrieve lost fortunes encourages his ward to pose as a doll at the Panama Exhibition and carry off the $10,000 prize. In the person- nel there is also a henpecked husband and his suffragette wife, a "nigger" who is always in trouble, a Spanish Senorita well versed in the art of love-making, and, of course, the ubiquitous lover of tho lady in the title role. "The Million Dollar Doll" is not to be classed among front-rank musical comedies, but with the principal roles in capable hands sprightly and tuneful accounts against the} a pretty fair round of approval. The comedy is helped out by many catchy musical numbers, both solo efforts and choruses, and by smart dances, Irene Medora as "The Million Dollar Doll' is happily placed. Full of life and possessed of a sweet voice, she has much to do with. securing the success achieved. Stanley, as the lover, who carries the heavy end of the solo work, is ¢yually successful. Helen Claremont as the Spanish Senor- # ita and Arthur C. Burgess, the a hen-pecked husband, and Jack B. Williams, the colored person, who between them provide the comedy, also deserve mention. 48th Highlanders Band at Bar- rie Fair.
