Six days of excitement planned for Barrie Fair By STEPHEN GAUER ()f The Examiner One hundred and twenty-six years old and still going strong. The Barrie Fair opens Aug. 21 for six days of farm exhibits and competitions. midway rides and grandstand entertain- ment. Last year's fair drew more than 55,000 people, ac. cording to Don Crowe, fair manager, and the 1979 version of the fair promises to be bigger and better than ever. The fair's board of directors have added a few new wrinkles this year. A special senior citizens day has been declared for Thursday, with a 2 p.m. grandstand show and special arts and crafts, flowers and baking demonstrations. Admis- sion for seniors will be reduced from $2.50 to $1.50 and a free bingo game offered. On Sunday, the final day of the fair, a special family rate will be in effect -- $5 for two adults and two children. And on Saturday night, in place of the usual horse races, the fair is presenting a grands- tand show featuring an illu- sionist named Kramer and a performing family called the Leahys, who sing, play fiddle and do old-fashioned step danc- ing. PASSES And fmr the first time this year, the fair is offering weekly passes. A pass admitting one car and one driver is $10, while a single admission pass is $7. Also for the first time, anyone who pays admission will be allowed to leave the fairgrounds and return the same day at a later time. The Good Brothers, a Cana- dian country-rock band that's won two Juno awards for best country group, perform Tues- day at 2 and 8 p.m. at the grandstand. On Wednesday, a thrill show by Joie Chitwood and his team of stunt drivers is featured at 8 p.m. Thursday's grandstand show features The Paul Caldwell Show, and Stella Parton performs at two shows on Sunday, the final day of the arr. Arts and crafts from throughout Simcoe County and from as far away as Manitoba will also be part of the fair. PRIZE MONEY Exhibitors will compete for more than $40,000 in prize money at the fair. "We like to keep the country notations. ..oooon..l STELLA PARTON . . . grandstand performer fair atmosphere," says Crowe, who's been on the fair's board of directors for 11 years. "Our motto is a 'good old-fashioned family fair.' " Crowe says the fair draws most of its crowd from Barrie and further north. The fair: began as a fall fair, held every September, but because bad weather plagued so many fairs, the event was shifted to August. Conflicts with the CNE in Toronto haven't caused problems, says Crowe, because exhibitors manage to attend both the Bar-- rie Fair and the Toronto exhibi- tion. "The fair worked really well last year," says Crowe. The Barrie Fair opens at 10 am. Tuesday to Saturday and at noon on Sunday. Admission is $2.50 for adults, $1.50 for students, 50 cents for children with pre-schoolers admitted free. Parking at the fairgrounds is $1.
