To Help Themselves WEDNESDAY AUG 11 1954 Helping The Handicapped The value of the contribution which handicapped men and women can make to Canadas economic progress is being em phasized in number of ways optional committee on which federal and provin cial governmentscmployer and employee and social welfare organizations all have representation has stressed the importance of helping the handicapped to help them selves The great majority of the provinces have now signed agreements tocooperptej with the federal government in rehabilita tion efforts Recently ncourse of national importance on rehabilitation and counselling of the handicapped was held at the University of Western Ontario The majority of students were key officers of the special placements division National Employment Service The Department of Veterans Affairs was also represented For month these students listened to lectures by professors on the staff of Western and other universities coli eerning the nature and manifestations of various diseases and disabilities andhow they affected the employablllty of those who had experienced them The course was sponsored by the Unem ployment Insurance Commission which ad ministers thc National Employment Ser vice It was eooperatlve effort on the Part of the Commission and the university and its value will become more and more apparent as time goes on Tliespccial placements division of National Employ ment Service is concerned primarily with assisting persons suffering from handicaps of varying nature to find work which will he suitable for them This effort in order to be successful requires knowledge of the nature of handicaps and their relation to the wlioie field of work It has been felt by the Commission that course which would enable its officers to learn more about the medical side of the various dis abilities would be helpful More and more it is becoming apparent that the handicapped individual stands fl better chance of living reasonably happy and successful life if employed where hclor she can do useful work than otherwise More and more it has also become apparent that handicapped persons when given the right work can make great contribution to the economic life of tile country The lost world war demonstrated their value to their country it has been found that handicapped person properly placed some tlmcs does work superior to the socallcd normal individual The mportoncc of finding the right work for each handicapped individual immedi ately becomes apparent That is the Job of the special placements division of tho National Employment Service It is some tlrncs difficult one blit remarkable suc cess has becii achieved Employers are now becoming aware of the value of handi capped workers In many cases they are elloperating wholeheartedly knowing that by so doing they help both the handicapped individual and themselves Students who took the course at Western Ontario University will be expected to hand oil the information there iiatlicrod to their associates in the offices of the Ullniliploy lilclit Insurance Commission They came from 11 over Canada aiid they worked hard obtaining the knowledge available to tllllll in tin lectures These lecturer will it is pxpeotcd form the basis for further traili lily of the National Employment Service staffs all time Hoes on Reason For Unemployment
