tending church or auxiliary meetings she reads Her favorite author is Grace Liv ingston Hill and she has most of her books in hardback covers Mrs Paddison 96 sends out get well cards hristmas cards and many other occasion cards keep ing in touch and uptrrdatc with people in her communi tv Last year was only able to give the church 32 pair but this year gave 63 pair she said The mittens are collected by Collier Street Lnited Church in Barrie and distributed among the Indian people living on Christian Island also gave some to the Salvation Army with strict orders they werent to be sold When Mrs Paddison was 94 years old she insisted that her doctor remove the cataracts from her eyes which had limited her vision to point where shhe could no longer read or knit OPERATION SLESSFLL The operation was very successful and with new pair of glasses she resumed her favorite pasttimes Born in Essa Township in 1881 her parents moved to Sunnidale Township when 513 was oneandahalf years She married Ed Paddison on Dec 1910 The couple had four children all born in the home she lives in today in New Lowell Helen Plaxton the first of the four children lives in Angus with husband liff son George lives in British Columbia while Ann and her husband John live with Mrs Paddison second son Herb died in 1972 KNIT FOR BROTHERS Knitting is not something new to Mrs Paddison used to help my mother knit long stockings for my six brothers In those days boys wore short pants when they were young and when it got cold they needed warm leg stockings remember they were at least yard long she said Now enjoy knitting mitts it passes lot of time for me thn get tired of it put it down and pick up book Ann brings me new ones from the library when need them She says she judges the size of the mitts by using her own hand have wide band but its not too long so just knit un til its the size want make them in all sizes and all colr ors Grandchildren and great grandchildren also benefit from her knitting talents each receiving pair of mitts for Christmas Of the 12 great grandchildren there are two sets of twins They each received tiny matching mitts as they are just two yearsold She also has nine grandchildren Has she seen change in the way people celebrate Christmas over the years Yes it has changed peo ple dont seem to enjoy it as much remember when was young someone would hitch up some horses to sleigh and pick us all up We would go to someoncs house or just for ride and think fun in those we had more days than people do now with their cars They seem to think they have to drive Staff Reporter Parents and store owners have been asked to watch out for baby rattles which do not meet safety standards developed by the federal depart ment of consumer and corporate affairs Parents should destroy any rattle of size which might lodge in an infants throat says news release from the department Rattles of this size are suffocation hazard The department has issued instruct ions for assembling sim ple gauge to be used as guide for determining the safe sized for rattles The reason standards have been required is that there have been some deaths resulting from unsafe rattles said lov Woolaan of the Barrie branch of the Consumers Association of Canada Even sincc the Hazardous Products Act there has been death she said Mrs Wooland said these rattles can no longer be legally manufactured in Canada but parents may have them in their homes without realizing the potential danger She said retailer may still have old stock which does not comply to current st an dards Regulations stipulating safe size for rattles were introduced in June of this year STANDARDS There are standards for all toys sold in Canada but there has not been sufficient Wooland said testing by Separate School in Barrie Its regular nursery school program conducted entirely in French says Mrs Janet LaRoque president of the parents association for the French nursery school The purwse of the program is to give children experience in hearing French The exwrimental program is sponsored by the Association anadicnncFrancaisc de LOn tario iAFi an independent txlucational organization The Simcoe County Roman Catholic Separate School Raord provided classroom facilities for the French nursery pro gram at Monsignor lair Separate School on undles Road We have an enrolment of 17 youngsters between the ages of three and four and approx imatcly three of them are already bilingual Also there is one French anadian child who doesnt speak any English yet said Mrs Laltoque The nursery school teacher for this French program is rs laire Gauthier of Canadian Forces Base Borden she recently arrived to Ontario from Quebec and doesnt speak any English Ilcr assistant is Mrs Andree Forget of
