barrie and Simcoe county Barriearea weather station inquest iury suggested by By JOHN BRUCE Examiner Staff Reporter The coroners ury investigating the Sept aircrash here at claimed five lives sug gested Tuesday the federal government con sider setting up weather reporting station in the Barrie area After nearly six hours of deliberation the fivemember panel also recommended that new structures more than 500 feet high be equipped with flashing highintensity strobe lights and that modifications be made to the warning light systems on existing structures more than 500 feet high to make them more visible in periods of reduced visibility The jury in its verdict considered the weather prime factor in the crash of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Ltd airplane which killed the pilot and four senior ex ecutives of the company The plane crashed into CKVRs 1000foot transmission tower in light rain fog and low clouds Killed in the crash were John Mather 56 of Toronto Gordon Allen 61 of Falcon bridge Roy Cleland 41 of Onaping Kenneth Dunn 56 of Scarborough and the pilot Ar mand Hollinsworth 41 of Mississauga The jury after six hours of deliberation Tuesday ruled the men died when the lane struck the CKVR tower in limited visi ility and weather WARNING LIGHTS Along with possible weather station in the Barrie area the jury made two recommenda tions concerning warning lighting systems on all structures higher than 500 feet All such structures now being built or in the planning stages should be equipped with flashing highintensity strobe warning lights which operate 24 hours day the jury said Existing structures over 500 feet which have red warning lights should be equi ped with photoelectricsensing devices which ac tivate the lighting system placed at the loca tions of each light the jury said adding that there should be manual switch to turn the lights on in periods of limited visibility However if that modification does not in crease the chances of seeing the structure during periods of reduced visibility the lights should be left on 24 hours day the jury recommended LIGHTING SYSTEM The question of the lighting system on the CKVR tower and federal guidelines concern ing warning lights were the subject of much of the testimony heard during the four days of evidence In its decision the jury did not discuss the advisability of building new 1000foot tower on the same site as the one knocked down in the plane crash Evidence introduced during the in uest showed that the CKVR tower may havdbeen approved by Department of Transport in violation of its own guideline restricting the height of towers to 500 feet within two statute miles of recognized visual flight rules air way The CKVR tower was about 2000 feet from Highway 400 visual flight rules airway used extensively by pilots according to Dave McNall Barrie resident and pilot new 1000foot transmitter tower is being constructed on the same site Thedjurys recommendations will be for warde to the Department of Transport New lights for TV tower Television station TKVRs new 1tX0foot transmitter tower will be nipped with high iiitensity strobe warniiigxlights which will operate 24 hours day Jack five men aboard slammed into the sta tions threeyearrold transmitter tower recommended Tuesday that all new struc tures more than 500 feet high be equipped with strobe warning lights to make them more visible to pilots in bad weather The new tower should be completed by the end of January weather permitting Mat tenley said His major objective is to get the tower finished as soon as possible he said so the station can resume broadcasting at full power But for some CKVR viewers there will be no television for Christmas this year CKVRs temporary transmitting equip ment is not powerful enough to reach all of the viewers who picked up the stations signal before the crash he said Police to lay charges in seatbelt violations Police will lay charges against drivers caught not wearing seatbelts in
