Monday have real concern about the safety of the people in some of the buildings in Barrie he said during debate over the ci tys new public hall licensing bylaw Our fire prevention bylaws arent good he said Some day theres going to be major fire with loss of life and youre going to be saying youre the fire chief what did you do about it Chief McAllister said in an in terview only the new public hall licensing bylaw and the Ontario Building Code give him any real power to enforce fire safe ty The bylaw will apply onl to public halls while the building code applies only to new con struction or changes of use In most buildings he said fire prevention officers can on ly advise improvements in fire safety standards with no power of enforcement LONG PROCESS He can also order hazards repaired or buildings demolish ed under Fire Marshals order he said but the process is long and complicated and has never been used in Barrie Chief McAllister said most other municipalities are in the same position as Barrie though some like Midland have adopted bylaws based on the National Fire Code published by the National Research Coun cil of Canada He said within year or two Ontario is expected to
