12 the oxamlner Tuesday Dec 13 1977 as see it We dont need By SCOTT HASKINS Examiner orts Writer The Russians are coming Russians are coming Each year its the same old story Russian hockey teams invade Canada around Christmas win the games and go home thinking they are the best hockey players in the world No way Were still the best forget who they are playing They beat the New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins Big deal Who doesnt beat those teams In 1972 we faced the Russians for the first time and despite their manipulation of the referees Paul Henderson came through with winning goal with only 32 seconds remaining in the series In 1974 the same Russian team beat the World Hockey Association allstars in an eightgame series but there were only tive or six players on the Canadian team who would rate in the top 30 in Canada The Russians are good hockey players no one can dispute that fact They are tremendous skaters and play makers but lack one vital quality pride Canadian hockey players have pride They are used to fighting back When the chips are down Canadians come through with the big play When was the last time you saw the Russian bench empty after an important goal They resemble hockey playing machines showing little or no emotion during the course of game The one fact that really irks me is that some socalled hockey faiis actually feel sorry for the Russians GlY LAFLElR the worlds best Fighting is part of hockey There have been fights since the first game in the late 1800s Russians refuse to drop their stick and gloves stand back and throw punches Instead they resort to speariiig kicking and high sticking Canadians retaliate and end up getting the penalties while the Russians get off free Canadian teams showed their superiority in Super Series 76 The Russians won the majority of the games but not against the top teams The Montreal anadiens tied the Soviet Red Army squad 33 but only because of the tremendous goaltending of ladislav Tretiak The Philadelphia Flyers pounded Red Arr my 11 and the Buffalo Sabres beat the Soviet Wings 126 proving that once you get by Tretiak the Russians are very weak in goal The Russians beat the Rangers Islanders Bruins and the Penguins They were allowed to add three players to each team while anadian teams American cities but Canadian playersl used their regular lineups For the first time in the history of international hockey we were allowed to use our best players in last years Canada Cup and it was really no contest Canada won the title over Czechoslovakia in two straight games The Russians didnt even make the fiital but of Russian hockey The Russians may win the games but fans sometimes The crosscountry skiers have taken to the trails at Molsons Park although the park will not to risk losing with packed lineup At the conclusion of the final game in Montreal the Czechs proved they are true sportsmen They stayed through the final presentations waved to the crowd and exchanged sweaters with the Canadian players Do you think the Russians would have done the same gslated this weekend thing The National Hockey League tNHL seems to have the idea that it needs the Russians dont agree There is enough good hockey without having to put up with them Is it absolutely necessary to go through the humiliation of losing to Russian team when we dont use our best players Let them play under our conditions and then see how they do against players like Guy Lafleur Darryl Sittler Bobby Clarke and Larry Robinson The outcome is obvious HERE AND THERE the aged pacer of the year by the
