Bantams defeat Richmond Simcoe Minor Hockey League County Sports Tournaments for oldtimers By BILL CURRAN Oldtimers hockey teams arent lacking in opportunities for Earticipation in outstanding tournament play again this hoc ey season The Canadian Oldtimers Hockey Association has listed six major competitions to teams which are interested in travelling and those inc ude Barrie and area Oldtimers Murray Valiquettes Barrie Credit Union hockeyists have entered the Florida classic which is to be held at St Petersburg and Lakeland April 15 and 23 The players already have had much activity highlighted by good showing in the Molsons invitational tournament at Toronto where they won three games and lost only one with Jon Weeks leading the attack and Don Wardle starring in goal Dave Hogben Ken Robertson Jack and Don Graves Arnold Neal and Ed Cockburn were among other local standouts Orillia Oldtimers are returning to Europe for third year in row having decided to visit Copenhagen Denmark where an international tournament is scheduled to take place March to 12 Former New York Ranger Dale Rolfe and former veteran pro with Los Angeles Blades and Vancouver George Ford will again head the Orillia veterans Last spring they won their division of the tournament at Switzerland with five vic tories and are anxious to try for more awards to add to the trophy and medals received then Teams which do not wish to travel outside of Canada have other fine opportunities threeday tournament for Oldtimers is planned at Victoria Jan 13 14 and 15 The Charlottetown tournament on Prince Edward Island is to follow on Jan 20 21 and 22 Cornwall Ont is having angther tournament the latter part of January on the 27 28 an 29 fourday event is planned at Regina Saskatchewan opening on Friday Feb 17 FORMER BARRIE PLAYERS WITH ORILLIA With Bill Red Barrett having decided to remain on the sidelines four former Barrie players are still active with the Orillia Oldtimers and are looking forward to another Euro pean flight George Ford who played for Barrie seniors in the early 1970s after retiring from 15 years of pro hockey has been flashing some of his oldtime sharpshooting skills with Orillia Whitney Mousseau and Billy Burtch also have been going strong up in front while Max Richardson has shown he still retains some of his old defensive skill Along with exNHLer Dale Rolfe these veterans played leading roles in the Orillia victory at Switzerland Goaler Bob Shropshire and sniper Gary Kennedy were other stars of that series Walter Windy Varty is manager of the Orillia team and Blake Uren coach Both were onetime players with Orillia teams in the Georgian Bay League Another wellknown area hockeyist of few years ago Terry Gordon is also member of the Executive In their first two exhibition games the Orillians lost to Owen Sound and Orillia Kinsmen both by close margins But officials were far from discouraged We are just trying to gradually get into shape youngster Ross learned to play golf at the Lake St George course in East Simcoe which was formerly owned by his father Ed Leeder also wellknown progolfer for years After becoming pro Ross has given came up with an impressive effort to defeat the Whitby Iroquois 74 Friday night at the Barrie Arena in the Ontario Senior Hockey League Les Burgess and Gary Lyte paced the Flyers attack with two goals each while Bob Wasson and Phil Branston each had goal and three assists Lyle and Wasson teamed up with Branston to form new line Friday dubbed the Action Line The line completely dominated the play when they were on the ice and things hap pened when they got hold of the puck think we found us new line said Steve Cripps Flyers general manager GREAT EFFORT cripps said the whole team put out great effort to win and the victory boosted the Flyers into fourth place in the league standings The Flyers are tied with Whitby and Brantford for fourth place The Flyers were in sixth place going into the game Gord Coatcs team president and coach said he was pleased with the way the team played but the club still played in streaks He said the Flyers played an outstanding first period when they held 41 ead Whitby came back to make it 43 hockey game going into the final period The Flyers broke loose late in the third period with three goals to put the game on ice We played bad second period Coates said EXPLAINS oatcs explained the Wasson Lyte and Branston line had been formed with the signing of centrcnian Don lannahill He said the Branston Paul Regan and Wayne King line had not produced and as result had to be broken up The logical place to put Tan nahill was at centre Regan has played leftwing before so we moved him over Coates said We needed leftwinger for Wasson so we moved Branston with his first goal of the season when Bran ston fed him pass from behind the net The Flyers had several close calls but Lyte was finally able to poke the puck home Wasson earned an assist Whitby made it
