If kids are growing up too fast these days you cant put all the blame on television trio of kids in California thought theyd make little mad money killing ground moles with their secret formula and came face to face with bureaucracy It reminds me of the woman who wrote me few years ago from small town in the Midwest She was going to stage garage sale No big deal just some stuff that would bring her daughters bedroom up to health standards once again black light that makts things glow in the dark guitar slightly warped several hair dryers an old record player and an exercise rope never used She was informed she needed licence at the cost of $100 The clerk at the town hall told her to see the building in spector He located her property on the town map and filled out permit listing things she could not sell She was guided to another office where the document was notarized and duly wamed that she must give the sale on the date listed The town building inspector then escorted her to police headquarters where an officer wanted to make sure she realized the licence had to be in conspicuous place She told him she would put it on the big tree on her front lawn The officer wanted to know if the tree was indeed on her property or was close enough to the curb to be town tree because if it was she couldnt use it She told him that last winter when large branch fell down in storm and she called the police she was told it definitely was HER tree She figured it would only be matter of time before the zoning commission came down on her for doing business in residential area Food and Drug to inspect her coffee Price Control for her merchandise Environmental Protection Agenc for campers who parked outside her door all night Equa Opportunity protesting lack of minorities working the garage antitrust suit for her monopoly of her own garage Internal Revenue Service officers question ing her income wages to workers plus their pension benefits and retirement plan and the Sierra Club for defacing the tree by nailing permit to it And to think three kids thought that mountain out of molehill was just dumb saying fall infers Smoke stains are problem DEAR POLLY recently purchased lovely home but the flagstone fireplace is stained with smoke some apparently spilled liquor and seems greasy where someone probany roasted franks in the fireplace hope you or some of the readers of your fine column will tell me how to remove these stains without damaging the flagstones Mr GG Jr DEAR MR GG JR You really have problems Some authorities suggest cleaning smoke stained stone fireplaces as follows Add four ounces yellow laundry soap to enough hot water to make quart of soft soap Heat until soap dissolves cool and then stir In onehalf pound powdered pumice stone and one half cup household ammonia After mixing well use to scrub stones with stiff brush Use clean brush to apply another coat and leave on about fiftBen minutes scrub off with brush and clean warm water Rinse with more clear warm water Test first just to be sure of effects on your particular stone Perhaps this will also remove those various other spots POLLY DEAR POLLY NMB wrote how she stores he embroidery floss in pill containers so want to tell the other readers how keep mine in small manual type book about five by seven and half inches that has about 75 ges in it Each color is kept on separate page and dif erent shades of that color on the adjoining pages store this book and its contents in candy box in which also put my embroidery needles with the needle most recently used stuck in the corner of the book If the box is large enough embrotdery hoops and scissors can also be stored In It so everything is quickly available when one wants to embroider HAZEL DEAR POI YWhen running bath water for my small daughter always make sure turn off the hot water first and then let enough cool water run to cool off the faucet This prevents the chance of an accident should the child rub the faucet when moving about out of curiosity This in or those tubs with adjoining faucets and for those with so arate faucets suggest keeping small plastic cup of co water to pour over the hot faucet Most families with children have such cups in the bathroom anywa childs built water should be cooler than that for an adult so that extra cup or so of cold water will not be really wasted as it goes Into the bath water IIIANIIIIA
