meeting Trustee Dr Allen Fisher of Barrie told the Board that gifted students are being impeded in their intellectual develop ment because of the system of education in the county Not much is done in this county for gifted children Dr Fisher warned think we are lacking in foresight here we have been automatically discouraging children who are gifted our programs at times might actually impede the gifted child In replying to Dr Fisher criticisms Robert Newman superintendent of student services for the Simcoe County Board of Education explained that members in the Simcoe county educational system must make programs for the gifted students more visible to the public Not enough has been done in our county to publicize the programs for gifted students There is also gathering in terest for the education of gifted students by the classroom teachers and the department heads in our schools Newman suggested that one of the problems in the area of gifted student programs is the idea of segregating these students from the regular stream of education vf Newman emphasized the need for involving gifted students in programs that would foster the development of their interpersonal skills
