minister of natural resources Frank Miller says that creation of stable political climate is one of the few means at Canadas disposal for luring international in dustry and investment Speaking Thursday at the luncheon meeting of the Barrie Rotary Club Miller observed that Canada is trusted na tion but not as trusted as it used to be Companies consider the political risk factor when they decide where to start up operations the minister noted The dependability of the government and attitudes toward profitmaking are high on their list of priorities Canadas risk factor has risen as result of national uni ty controversies he said The government can help to mold stable political situa tion but there are many factors beyond its control Miller noted One of them is the world market cant make people eat nickel he said alluding to the Inca stockpiles in Sudbury NEWCIIAIJJCNGES Changing technology and new discoveries around the world bring new challenges to the Canadian resource industries particularly mining and forestry These are industries vital to the wellbeing of Canadians Miller said Fully onequarter of our provincial exports come from our exported resources He suggested that those quick to criticize the industries for ex ploitation of resources likely have not considered just how much they affect their own livelihoixl directly or indirect ly Many businesses here wouldnt exist without them Miller is relative newcomer to the natural resources port folio having takeii over the posttion in February after almost three years as provin cial health minister The Bracebridge resident told the ltotarians that he spent most of the summer familiariz ing himself with the respon sibilities issues and staff of the ministry one of the two thought of in government as pleasant place to be LUMBER INDUSTRY One of his early pro nouncements was that the government would be transfer ring the responsibility for forest regeneration to the lumber industries At the moment Ontario is adequately replacing about twothirds of the Crown land forests being harvested every year Miller said That statistic can be improved and my first priority is to make it better its renewable resource In his view the transferrence of the responsibility to the private sector will have that result If government can do it bet ter its the first time ever he quipped Miller said that in British Columbia the duty of replan ting trees has been held by private industry for 20 years and they would have it no other way Meeting the demands of workers could result in downfall Decor MIDLAND Speciali
