hy 16 the examiner Thursday Nov 17 1977 Jambo Dancer is for sale By PAUL DELEAN Examiner Staff Writer Champion pacing horse Jambo Dancer who has handsomely rewarded $50000 investment made two years ago by the and Stable of Barrie is destined to change hands Nov 26 The fiveyearold son of Dancer Hanover will be one of 18 and Stable horses available on that date at the annual fall mixed sale of the Canadian Standardbred Horse Society at the CNE in Toronto Thats pretty well all of our stock Im getting right out of the game Our business commitments have grown to the point where its just too hard to keep up said coowner Roger Gif fen who operates Giffen Farm Equipment in Minesing The decision to sell was made about two months ago Giffen and Bob Gamer of Barrie were partners in the and Stable which purchased Jalnbo Dancer for $50000 iii December 1975 The horse was honored as Harness Horse of the Year last year Whats up Big chance hasgone By WERNER BERGEN Examiner Sports Editor Now that the chance of lifetime has gone perhaps the Barrie Flyels 111 the Ontario Senior Hockey League will start winning hockey games The league is sending team to compete in an interna tional hockey tournament in Czechoslovakia iii January and the top two teams in the league are competing for the right to go In 12 game tournament held in conjunction with regular league play the Flyers finished in fourth place As luck would have it first place Cambridge Hornets and third place Orillia Terriers are playing off to decide who goes Second place Thunder Bay Twins bowed out of the playoffs because of other commitments The Flyers had their chance for second place but blew the opportunity third place finish as it now turns out would have put the team in the running to go to Europe It is obvious the Flyers are capable of playing better hockey than they have so far this season This brings up the question did the Flyers not want to go to Czechoslovakia Well we had our chances said Steve Cripps Flyers general manager Cripps said the team was having its problems He said goals were being scored by the players but the team had trouble defensively In 13 games the Flyers have scored 53 goals but have allowed 58 Newcomers to the team Wayne King and Bob Wasson have been scoring they have 19 goals between the two of them However the big goalscorers for the Flvers in the past have been noticeably absent from the scoring statistics Paul Regan Bob Baird and Wayne Carleton have com bined total nine goals in 13 games The goaltending has been weak with two of the goalies allowing on the average almost five goals game But the goaltendlng should not be blamed tor all of the teams pro blems Often the opposition has scored when it had no right being in the Flyers end of the rink and with control of the puck The defence has had trouble moving the puck out of their own end and keeping the opposition from crossing the Barrie blueline It seems the Flyers have had trouble getting motivated to win games Perhaps the team didnt want to go to Europe but then again the pressure to win may have hampered the teams performance To win hockey games it takes 100 per cent effort from every member of team The Flyers have experienced hockey players and the name of the game is to win especial ly under pressure Now that some of the pressure to win is gone hopefully the club will come around and play the kind of hockey it is capable of playing 1OK1N1 AROLND With the snow sleet and other unpleasant weather in Barrie recently it hasnt stopped golfers from taking to the links In the drizzle and rain on said Paul Swain director for public relations in Barrie on Wmiiiesday Our philosophy is to make the drivers and mechanics as familiar with the machines as possible Swain said This ty of course is to bring driver and mechanic together We feel til clinic will help the guy win the race before he goes on the track Bombardier feels the Racing Clinic Program for selected drivers adds greatly to blending man and machine to insure their fair share of the much sought after checkered flag Swain said MECHANICS IMIORIANI Swain said mechanics were at the clinics because the mechanic is an important racing had changed dramatically in recent years and it was to everyones benefit that the people involved knew as much about the machines as possible Every aspect of the new racing machines was examined at the clinic Rick Franks Sr Ontario Snowmobile Racmg Federation president of Alliston attended the clinic as an in vited guest Franks has raced on the Bombardier tea ms in the past and of Examiner Sports Editor lOyearold boy in Barrie will not be playing hockey this winter because of mix up Craig Kennedy son of Mr and Mrs Winston Kennedy 188 Wellington St is novice aged player who tried to make the move to peewee Craig wasnt signed to players card for the Car dinal Cash and Carry Peewees and played two ex hibition games before he was cut The novice team he had tried out for originally had signed two goalies and as result Craig is now goaltender without team We were told of the deci sion too late to get him on another team Kennedy said The novices had already picked their goaltenders and the teams in the house leagues had already been picked They always sign goalies first Part of the problem is that Craig moved up division Kennedy stated he had writ ten etter to the Barrie Minor Hockey Association giving his permission to let Craig move up division He said he also had letters from the two teams involved stating their approval as re quired by the BMHA GIVEN PERMISSION He was given permission to play up and then they tell us he cant Kennedy said According to the BMHA constitution player who wishes to play out of his divi sion must have the approval of the executive after the matter had been reviewed by the coaches and managers committee Kennedy said Craig had been given permission to pla in the peewee division antllhe assumed the permisv sion had come from the com mittee Eugene Walden BMHA president said the matter had been looked into as to what had taken place At that time the team he was trying out for had two goalies ready to be signed and the second team also had two goalies Walden said It was the coachs conten tion that he could carry three goalies because one was in jured Walden said the Ontario Minor Hockey Association allowed goalies in division to move up as backup goaltender They had sufficient goalies in the division Walden said Walden said there may have been mixup in com munications between the various parties involved and someone may have inferred that permission had been given for Craig to move up DISCOURAGE ACTION Walden said it is up to the committee to recommend to the executive if player can move out of his division Walden stated the executive in Barrie this winter because of mixup He to the peewee division With Craig is his father tried to discourage this kind of action unless the player was of an exceptional calibre Walden also said birth dates were also considered if player moved up He said if player was born in the ear ly part of the year he would only be little younger than the next highest division players He said the physical and emotional maturity of player was also taken into account when moving player up division Kennedy said the maturity of goaltender was not too important since he was not directly involved in the physical checking end of the game Walden said when the deci sion had been reached not to allow Craig to move up to the peewec division the BMHA volunteered to try and get Craig into the house league Kennedy said he had coached and managed teams in the Legion Minor Hockey League and was member of the Royal Canadian Legion but could not get Craig into the house league Kennedy said when the BMHA had reached its deci sion he had already checked the house leagues They have too many goalies as it is Kennedy said Kennedy said Craig would probably play hockey in the future but sitting out year would hinder his progress as player Barrie Colts host Kings tonight at Barri Barrie Colts of the Mid Ontario Junior Hockey League play host to the Owen Sound Kings
