concert at demonstrated deep feeling and artistic understanding of Georgian College Theatre Boldness rather than interpretation feature of fluteharp concert here Flautist Paula Elliott and harpist Marie Lorcini will be remembered more for their boldness than for their artistic interpretations in last weeks flute and harp concert in the Georgian College Theatre The two artists both of whom play for the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra attempted to satisfy the au diences musical thirst by playing music from infrequently played compositions ji As it turned out however the audience responded most positively to two very popular and traditional selections ti these were Greensleeves and the love song from Glucks ij opera Orpheus and Eurydice Flautist Paula Elliott informed the audience the love song from the Gluck opera was one of her and Miss Lorcinis favorite classical pieces Quite right they made this most evident in their fine interpretation of the love song from Orpheus and Eurydice Furthermore it was this musical selection that rescued the flute and harp duo concert from falling into the arms of mediocrity The crystalline tones of Lorcinis harp were neatly highlighted by wellbalanced arpeggios all of which conjured in the listener sensating images associated with this beauti ul love song from Orpheus and Eurydice As well in this delightful love song the verve of Miss Elliotts playing established qualitative blend between the flute and harp The velvety tonalcolors of Lorcinis harp tlgllended caressingly with the sensitive melodies of Elliotts ute Another musical selection the flute and harp duo managed to well was EtchingThc Vollard Suite by Canadas rry Somers This piece was musical portrayal of one of the periods in Picassos artistic development musmal score Unfortunately both for their artistic interpretations and the audiences senses Elliott and Lorcini struggled through the compositions of three unfamiliar twentiethcentury composers These three compositions were Sonatina 1965 by Sergin Natra Serenade No 10 79 by Vincent Per sichetti and Sonata by Alan Hov aness These eclectic type pieces may fit nicely in Masters class of technically conscious musicians but certainly not in concert program The Sonatina 1965 which featured harp solo by Marie Lorcini assaulted the ears with hod epod of dissonant musical sounds it had ve little me odic theme and its abstruse harmonics ha no emotive connota tions whatever The Serenade No 10 Op 79 comprised eight short movements each of which represent musical mood While the variety of moods were musically represented in each movement the fluteharp duo failed to bring these moods alive Technically the flute and harpist were adequate but they missed the mark artistically The Sonata by Hovhaness in which Lorcini was featured by herself lacked simple musical charm Lorcinis playing left nothing for the audiences senses to feed on The other selections in the flute and harp concert which was sponsored by the Barrie Concert Association included Sonata in Major by Leonardo Vinci Pavane et Bransles by Athoine Francisque Four Medieval Dances by Joseph Lauber Rondo by Emile Desportes and En
