for the construction of facilities conducive to culture and recreation The Simcoe County Board of Education believes so and passed resolution to that ef fect at its regular meeting Wednesday Trustee John McCullough speaking for the motion said that financial restraints at the grovincial level have prevented oards from constructing muchneeded general purpose rooms and library resource centres at some existing schools in lowgrowth areas These are facilities which the public would use for cultural and recreational activities after school hours thus they conform to the intent of Win tario funding he observed Trustee Dr Allen Fisher was concerned about the possibility of education becoming depen dent upon lotteries and the whims and caprices of chance but he supported the motion nonetheless Better that muchneeded Six schools up for sale Want to buy school The Simcoe County Board of Education has six up for sale as result of resolutions passed at its regular meeting this week The board is putting the unus ed tworoom Cedarview School in Vespra Township St Paul School in Innisfil Township Margaret Street School in Angus Silvercrest School in Wasaga Beach Mountain School in Tiny Township and Waverley School in Waverley on the market in an effort to raise funds for capital projects at some of its schools in low growth areas An education ministry deci sion from earlier this year has allowed school boards to sell school lands and structures declared surplus and apply the proceeds to proects that would not otherwise approved in the regular capital allocation program The one stipulation is that the properties be offered first to other school boards publicity supported postsecondary educational institutions the municipality in which the land is located ministry of the On tario government or an authori ty established by it and non profit organizations funded in whole or in part by the provin cial or federal governments If no bid at price acceptable to the board has been made by any of the entities above within 90 days of the offer the proper ty can be sold through cess of public tender In addition to the six schools the board is puttirrilg up for sale 1392 acres of la on Manley Street in Midland and 2049 acres in the east half Orillia Township Two other properties 32 acres on Collins Street in Call ingwood and the tworoom Thornton Public School will be reappraised by the board at the urging of some trustees They were also part of the Upgrading of Facilities Com mittees original list of surplus properties ln its report to the board the committee contended that ine qualities arise when new elementary schools in tgrowin areas are provide wit general purpose rooms resource centres and other amenities number of small schools are located in rural sections of the county which are not grow ing and lack all but the essen tial classroom areas In man instances the schools in suc locations are the only centres available for community ac tivities With these schools spe cifically in mind the board will create reserve fund for upgrading existing facilities Al proceeds from the sale of unused schools and land will go to the fund the pro New has been postponed for several years and our concern for the safety of students using the playing field and often mnning across the highway to retrieve balls has increased During the last few months Staff Reporter 36yearold former Angus resident was sentenced to four months in jail Thursday in pro vincial court in Barrie for what judge called deliberate and brutal assault Cla ton McConnell was con vict on charge of assault causing bodily harm against Edward Searale the man Mc Connell says molested his wife and terrified his children McConnell now of Belleville was charged by the Barrie OPP Sept 26 after Searale was rush ed to Royal Victoria Hospital with broken jaw and crush ednose Eyewitness Glenn Dobson testified Wednesday he saw Mc Connell repeatedly punch Searale in the face with heavy blows during an incident Sept 26 at the charcoal plant where Searale worked Then he put the boots to him kicking him about the shoulders he told Judge Nor man Nadeau Dobson who said he was standing six feet from Searale when the incident began said Searale was em tyhanded dur ing the fight an didnt want to fight He testified McConnell accus ed Searale of fooling around with his wife The fi ht lasted two minutes said son and Searale was left on the ground with blood on his face and shirt when Mc Connell left Dobson said no one moved to help Searale because they feared McConnells temper Searale who is slated for surgery related to his injuries on Jan 12 told Judge Norman Nadeau he couldnt remember any details of the incident CHANGES STORY second eyewitness Gilbert St Louis contradicted evid ence he gave police short after the incident when he too the stand Thursday As St Louis McConnells 20 yearold brotherinlaw took the stand Judge Nadeau ccn Sured McConnell for making gestures at the witness St Louis testified Searale threw the first punch with block of wood in one hand lung ing out at McConnell after he accused him of kissing his wife When challenged by Judge Nadeau and assistant crown at torney Thompson St Louis denied he was afraid of McConnell and said he had sort of forgot to tell police Searale threw the first punch McConnell took the stand to accuse Searale of forcing himself on his wife and scaring his small children McConnell said his wife Itll him at one point to go to her sisters because of her fear of Searale and finally confessed to him
