ethooxamlnsr TuudayNov81971 Love those Argonauts By WERNER BERGEN Examiner Sports Editor How do love thee let me count the ways That line from love poem could have been written by any one of over 40000 fans at the Canadian Football League game in Toronto Saturday Although it was one of the smallest crowds the Argonauts had this year the crowd was behind the team 100 per cent This does not mean the fans cheered wildly In fact the fans booed more often than cheered After years of high hopes and dismal performances the fans want winner In fact they want winner so badly the fans will sit through just about anything in the hope of victory If the Argos ever have winning season one of two things will happen fans may sit back in stunned disbelief or go hog wild in scene of team appreciation never seen before in profes sional sports Despite the teams many faults one cannot help but be an Argo fan The Argo faithful hope their team can pull one 33 out Ah there lies the key to the Argo box office success Hope It is hope that keeps the fans returning year after year It is hope that has the teams front office personnel signing top players and new coaches It is the hope David will defeat Goliath that keeps fans at Exhibition Stadium Some fans have suffered through many years with the Argos and instead of attendance dwindling as in other CFL cities the attendance grows It was treat attending my first Argo game after cheering for the team for almost 20 years It may have been treat being at the game but it wasnt fun watching the Argos fum ble their way to another defeat The fun started in the team conference room listening to Leo Cahill Argo coach explain why the team lost Cahill said he thought his team played well enough to win if and they did The Argos moved the ball well something they didnt do in Ottawa last week He said the team showed him stuff that gave him con fidence to go into the playoffs on Saturday and play real ball game against the Roughriders He said the team fumbl ed twice at the Calgary seven yardline and that could have cost the team at least six points The Argos lost 107 Cahill said he hated to lose but did not feel bad about the loss to Calgary He said it was game they should have won but the things he learned outweighed the fact that the team lost The sports writers in Toronto having heard comments like this before from Cahill asked him when he would get tired of explaining away losses Cahill didnt take that com ment too kindly We didnt lose we just ran out of time he said Cahill said the writers have all stated what should happen to coach who has won six and lost 10 games He then started to explain that with bit of luck the team should have won 10 and lost six Cahill is sports writers dream Some coaches give nothing but vague comments two word answers and unimaginative replies Then there is Leo Cahill he makes good 09Py gt= At times he gives outrageous statements controversml Talking to Cahill is like getting breath of fresh air after he ing locked in stuffy room There are some local coaches who are interesting to inter view following games Leading the list is Howie Forbes coach of the Barrie Colts in the
