are Communication is central By PAT GUERGIS Examiner Staff Reporter Television stifles com munication within the home leading to loneliness between husband and wife and juvenile delinqpency in children says Josep Carron Carron communications teacher at Georgian College says television dominates the communication system in most homes causing deficiency of communication between the people who live there and loneliness is the result It is also depressing as it dumps all the miseries of the world right into our lap If there is bad flood riot starvation or murder we hear about it almost instantly through radio and television We know whats going on all over the world every day he said Carron told group of secretaries at Barries Holiday Inn Saturday that 60 selfhelp clubs have rung up in Toronto compose mainly ofwomen They come to communicate with each other because they cant communicate at home They can say things and so meonelistens at home no one dowh Carron was speaking at selfimprovement seminar sponsored by the Barrie and District Chapter of the National Secretaries Association an in ternational organization He said many of the people who have attended his courses have admitted they are there for the friendship and compa nionship not necessarily for the contents of the course Most of our people problems are created from lack of com municationirit is central to everyting we do And yet it is difficult Carron said Whats so hard about it many people ask Its like breathing why the fuss Communication is much more than passage of in formation It involves emo tions motives ego attitudes and morals Petsh pet is pet is pet and thats how they were judged Saturday during the pet show held at the Bayfield Mall The show which was sponsored by the Barrie Humane Society attracted 150 entries including ducks birds cats hamsters and great variety of dogs ABOVE LEFT The llclmcr Carron says some colleges and universities are giving courses in listening Listening is an important part of the communication loop The speaker sends the message but someone has to receive it He told the group about lady psychiatrist he heard of who advertised that she would listen to anybody for fee She has more business than she can handle he said The teacher said noise is one of the chief barriers to listan ing especially intermittent noises of various volumes He said students often find it easier to study with radio on in the background Thats good in that case because it cuts out other noises Other barriers to good listen ing are the actions and ap pearance of the speaker wins dows and conflict with what is being said If the listener doesnt agree with the speaker than an inner conflict develops and listening ceases Fear and distrust of speaker also causes problem in listening Carron says transmitting message involves speaking writing and nonverbal methods Receiving is done by listening and reading BODY LANGUAGE Some experts say non verbal or body language as it is sometimes called makes up 60 per cent of the communication procedure tend to place it at 50 per cent He said there are both willing and nonwilling types of non verbal communication As an example be mentioned Aristo tie nasis who always wore sunglasses because he didnt want anyone in sec his eyes as they might betray what he was thinking You can tell to large degree what people are think ing by their nonverbal com munication Private body space the ow dr space immcdiately around each of us is part of our non verbal connnunication if it is invaded we feel uncomfor table farron said In our socicty if wc scc two people with thcir heads togcthcr wc think thcy arc cithcr necking or plotting Ilxr perts say the normal distancc for conversation is 30 inches apart any closer causes discomfort Iarron siiggcstod that members of the group try fac ing their companions in an elevator the next timc they travel in one rathcr than slar ing at the floor indicator as most people do He said this causes an infra ingmcnt on personal body space as does thc bumping created by confincd space EXECUTIVE TRICKS In businesses large desks are used to maintain distance and serve to create domination The size of desk Carron says usually gets bigger as the im portance of job position in creases There are lot of tricks designed for dominance and they are done with great deal of forethought For example when an ex ecutive is talking to subor linatc he may plug the conver sation with large gaps of silence This serves to make the person he is talking to nervous and puts them in dandy spot tobedominated This leads to the subor dinate chattering and giving in formation which the boss wouldnt have received other wise Its called an executive pause and is quite widely us ed Iarron said whcn he had an office he placed his desk so that his back was to thc window When anyone camc to soc him the light fell on their face and put them in an uncomforuible position Another method used is to keep somconc waiting who has family of Holly had three entries Kelvin 11 with his dog Peaches Korey it with Starsky won second prile and Kevin 12 with Freddy 15pound beige rabbit Next year they plan to bring Leroy shorthaired collie also ABOVE LEFT Mike ORourke anadian Forces Base Borden entered his the examiner Tuesday Nov 1911 ws everything from dogs to bus yet anytime my door is always open Sure maybe his door is open but once you get in there he makes it very obvious that he is contradicts the verbal com munication an appointment This shows who is boss These are all planned plays lhin thcrc is the and whoopingcough She also mentioned to have not heard of child getting polio for several years thought this disease was con uered Also what about the others Why go to the trouble there is no danger Please check with your medical consultants and give us the right information visit to the doctors office costs $25 these days Thank you Champalgn III Dear Champaign In recent months there has been frightening increase in measles rubella and whooping cough Not many people realize these diseases can cause mental retardation deafness pneumonia and encephalitis Polio has NOT been conquered There were 38000 cases of polio reported in 1954 In 1976 there were 10 Ten seems like small number but if your child were one of the 10 it wuld be significant number indeed This is the problem we are facing People have become complacent We cannot afford to wait for another epidemic to bit before we protect our children The United States Public Health Service has just printed new booklet parents Guide to Childhood Immuniza tion It is available free Write to Immunization Pueblo Colo 81009 USA This booklet will tell you what shots your child needs at what age and where to get the shots without charge in cer tain communities Oral polio vaccines are available free of charge to any schoolage child in Chicago and Cook County Parents should call the board of health They will be referred to the clinic nearest their homes urge every mother and dad to act to protect your children at once What else will you do today that is as im portant Dear Ann Landers get along with my motherinlaw well until picturetaking time For every major family event beginning with our wed ding she has spoiled the solemnity of the occasion by in sisting on having photographer on hand When we sealed our vows with kiss the camera was right under our noses Last week our daughter was baptized My motherinlaw hired photographer same one and directed all the pic turetaking When told her didnt like the idea she said Youll be glad to have the pictures in years to come do enjoy having pictures but would prefer fewer pic tures and little more dignity at affairs that are supposed to have religious significance What do you sug gest0verpowered Dear Over good commercial photographer knows how to take pictures without getting in the way Perhaps this is the problem In the future if the event is one you should be in control of such as the baptism of your child tell your motherinlaw you will engage the photographer You can then engage the photographer of of your choice give him explicit in structions on what you want and what you do not want MM Ending week of disasters By MARGARET WORTH Weve just had one of those disaster weeks Not totally disastrous thank goodness just somewhat calamitous in certain areas suppose most families go through negative patches and last week it was obviously our turn It started with food We all forgot how to cook Even the simplest of meals presented us with new culinary horrors One night it was the stew that someone forgot to cook for more than ten minutes then it was the Hungarian Goulash that nobody remembered to even look at for three hours followed by the cauliflower cheese that was slowly and carefully burned to cinder in my best oven to table ware right before the dish broke But that was just the beginning On Tuesday the dryer an ancient and much respected machine in our household gave huge sign and quietly ex pired No amount of banging pleading or threatening kicks on my part succeeded in reviving it You might think that clothes drying is minor detail unless like me you have four daughters who permanently dont have thing to wear if they dont wash and dry their painter pants right now Then the kettle blew fuse Nothing spectacular just quiet little sputter followed by cold silence and equally cold water Thursday lunchtime collected parking ticket right out side my own front door While was innocently sipping my chicken soup and quietly mulling over dried out cotta cheese naturally someone had lost the li the forces of law were deciding that was illegally parked $5 seemed rather exorbitant to me Friday the kitchen sink 0t blocked The small and invisi ble gremlin who obvious lives with us and is surely responsible for such mysteries as disappearing grapes from the fruit bowl and crumpled clothes on the bedroom floors took it into his wicked head to throw teaspoon into our somewhat ancient plumbing Result one very blocked drain pipe On Saturday in husband returned from his week in Van couver greeted him with open arms Do you want the news alphabetically chronologically or in order of im portance enquired sweetly handing him the plunger and large pair of pliers Pollxs Einters Getting swan back in shape DEAR POLLY have crocheted swan that could hold flowers but it is very soiled The neck and head are very hard hope someone can tell me how to wash my swan and then how to get it stiff again MRS VW DEAR MRS VW Yours is problem that would require bit of feeling ones way presume there is an opening at the t0p the back of the swan if you plan to use it as flower holder Find glass or plastic con tainer that fits in this Opening and that will hold the flowers Wash as you would any other crocheted article use small brush on the neck and head When clean would stiffiy starch the swan press out the excess with the hands put the container in the back to help hold it in shape as it dries and keep shaping it ever so often during the drying process Perhaps some of the readers have better ideas and will share them with us POLLY DEAR POLLY Im writing with regard to Alices Pet Peeve about the many men who do not offer their seats to elderly women when there are no more seats on the bus think it behooves any of us regardless of our sex to offer our seats to the elderly or any handicapped person regardless of their sex We all have the equal right to show our love for our feliowmen HELEN DEAR POLLY When vases cups or other deep containers have an odor that is hard to get rid of rinse them with COLD water and then lay the items on their side The odor usually leaves Also find that dish cloths or other cleaning cloths seldom have bad smell if they are wrung out in COLD water and let dry When bianching vegetables or straining food use 16inch square of nylon net instead of colander HRL DEAR POLLY use the best parts of worn bath towel to make bag to hold worn down and broken soap bits This is great to use when taking bath You get good lather and know you are using up every bit of your soap APW DEAR APW also like using such bag made of nylon net as suggested by another render POLLY
