cabinet to order new Ontario Municipal Board 10MB hearing on Barries annexation application The assomation in newsletter issued last week urged all eligible property owners who reside in the area of Innisfil slated to be annexed Jan to sign the petition The 0MB decision gave Barrie 13850 acres of land from Innisfil to provide the city with enough land to accommodate the 125000 people the province says will live in the city by 2011 Though most of its members live outside the area to be an nexed the association said it is opposed to the loss of valuable farmland and pollution of Lake Simcoe and its triggtaries that will occur if annexation is allowed to pro ce The areas that have been annexed from lnnisfil are agricultural recreational environmentally sensitive areas of lake creeks and watersheds the association said and when the proposed population of 125000 people moves in these areas will be destroyed through street previous city council motion to make Lakesnore Drive through have to go through normal rezoning procedures if it wants to move its Barrie terminal from upper Bayfield Street to the Continental Inn on Dunlop Street West city council decid ed Monday Travelways is arguing that the firm is being thrown out of its Hayfield quarters and needs approval for its new site by next Monday much faster than the necessary rezoning can be steered through plann ing board general committee council and the Ontario Municipal Board Travelways has formal notice to vacate the Hayfield Street property by Monday However the owners of the site BayLane Properties said in letter to council the notice was only formality and the firm has no intention of booting Travelways out lravelways has been oper ating out of trailer on the site and BayLane said it needs the trailer moved to another spot on the property to make room for paving commercial and office building on the site is due for completion next month and the BayLane letter says space for Travelways is still open in the building Ald Ernie Rotman said it could be an injustice to Travelways to leave the firm If youve been thinking of adding kitten to your family it might be worthwhile visiting the Barrie Branch of the Ontario Humane Society at 91 Patterson Road These three orphans are all ten ale re ei ht weeks old Examiner Photo Travelways has to wait for decision on new site without terminal after Mons day but other aldermen said the BayaLane letter showed there was no such danger Theyre not going to be out in the street Im sure of that Ald Nelson Garrett said Ald Fred Ruemper recalling councils battles with Travelways earlier this year over the zoning of the Bayfield Street site said councils deci sion would make no difference Zoning or no zoning has not in the past been deterrent to this firm Ald Ruemper told council Were probably just wasting our time come Nov Travelways is going to go where they want to go Travelways began using the Bayfield Street site late last year in violation of city zoning standards and council turned down four requests to legalize the operation before agreeing to fifth request in June The rezoning bylaw has not receiv ed formal council approval and was tabled Monday because of the confusion over lravelways latest request to move lravelways provmcial licr ence for its rilliaBarrier Toronto route requires Barrie terminal within half mile of Highway 400 and there was no land within that distance zoned to permit terminals at the time the operation began November municipal elec tion date will put heavier workload on municipal clerks and their staffs says city clerk Ben Straughan But just how much heavier will not be known until details of proposed election legislation are announced in the provincial legislature later this fall We dont think theyre going to make it unduly difficult Straughan said earlier this week Ontaro Treasurer Darcy McKeough has announced plan to hold municipal elections the second Monday in Nov ember instead of the first Mon day in December as at present Purpose of the change is to ire9 BEN STRAUGHAN avoid low voter turnout caused work for us in shorter period by December snowstorms Straughan said the change Novemberelection will probably mean more EXTRAWORKIDAD Ht Ileeqar IHHittite1flttqfi usual with his new my rat BM pl mo oxamlnor Tuesday Octobor 25 1977 Municipal election in November would men more Work However he said the extra workload will depend in part on other possible changes not yet announced such as the tim ing of municipal enumeration currently held in September and necessary for making up the voters list and the timing and length of the nominating period currently held for five days in November We wont know till the bill comes out he said McKeoughs announcement runs opposite to the position adopted by Barrie City council which approved motion ask ing tthat the December date be ep The council vote came after heated discussion which saw some aldermen support move of time getting ready for to an October date because of the possibility of November snowstorms council terms to Dec for staff Straughan told council at the time that his staff could live with November date but 0c tober would create serious pro blems In order to hold an October vote he said enumeration would have to take place earlier than September Enumeration in July or August would miss too many vaca tioners and deprive city staff of summer holi ays Straughan said while May or June enumeration would get too far out of date by October Some aldermen said an earlier election would leave lame duck council in office too long if the new councils term of office continued to begin Jan as at present However Straughan said McKeoughs legislation is ex pected to move the beginning of left side front to
