Toured by council members Ten members of city coun eil toured the old Collier Street firehall Friday and most came away shaking their heads at the condition of the building Pretty grim was Ald Nelson Garretts description of the buildings interior With its missing partitions broken windows and floors covered with pigeon dropp ings down proposed firstphase restoration contract in August and is now awaiting submission of proposals for restoring and operating the building as private bus iness on longterm lease Proposals are due Dec but the mayor says he wants the building checked by structural engineer before that and hopes to discuss the issue with council members at special general commit tee session after Mondays council meeting He said check should cost about $500 if structural engineer Alan Zeegen who is familiar with the building is called in Ald Janice Laking pro ponent of the arts centre pro ject said she found the buildings condition upset ting but still believes the project has future She said the missing parti tions and other evidence of halfsfinished work stem from councils decision to turn Mayor Ross Archer wants to call in structural engineer to see if the building can survive the coming winter without the roof cav ing in from the weight of snow or the foundation shif ting from ground frost However the tour failed to turn up any obvious evidence of significant structural defects The building was schedul ed for restoration as city arts centre but council voted Demonstration fizzles demonstration against the welfare office of city hall Friday drew reaction ranging from hostility to wami support Leanne Burke 19 led the demonstration in front of the municipal building on Collier Street to protest what she claims to be improper treatment when she recently applied for welfare assistance The group stopped about dozen people passing the office to explain their case Most were sympathetic but would not stop to demonstrate Several friends joined the group for few minutes and several other young people were persuaded to hold signs for few minutes At least five persons driving past or walking through the group were critical of the effort Two older women who brush ed quickly past the demonstrators said that they had worked all their lives and suggested that Burke go get job One man told Burke that most persons lose patience with welfare complaints when they see all those young people hanging around hotels spending their money on beer TheyI should really be home looking after the kids and keeping groceries in the icebox Three persons walking by said they couldnt stop to help because they were searching for iobs Lynne Smith 19yearold office worker from Wyevale said that shed been laid off her Barrie job several weeks ago when orders at the said that the woman was only refused welfare at the time of her visit because she refused to answer questions that he was required to ask In addition Hines said that Burke refused to apply for the unemployment benefits for which she is eligible At pm when the hundreds of people that the picketers had expected to join them failed to show the demonstration which began about 10 am was cancelled Im glad that we went through with it At least it shows that we were right If we hadnt been here people would think that the welfare department is right Burke said Its just too bad that it all the protest failed guess lot of people are afraid of the publicity even if they do support us Burke may be planning trip to Hamilton where she has brother who has offered her room for two weeks while she hunts
