uvrv County Sports Curlers ready for new season By BILL CURRAN The 1977 curling season has been opened in Simcoe County with local activity at several clubs Registrations at the Barrie Curling rink on Essa Road have reflected the keen early general interest in the roaring and sweeping game which could very well attain new heights of popularity in this area As pointed out in these columns before curlers from this county have captured their full share of provincial cham pionships in the past There is ample talent around wmcn should provide excellent promise of more outstanding achievements in the near future perhaps this 197778 season The Ontario Silver Tankard is major doublerink com petition which hasnt been won by curlers from this area for 21 years Orillia rinks skipped by George Fitzpatrick and Dr Baillie were the last winners of this handsome and coveted trophy in the county onetime Orillia lacrosse star Wilfred Varley who was amember of the Baillie rink when reminded of that cham pionship recently commented It is great honor for any curler to play on Tankard championship was glad to be given the chance tojoin the Fitzpatrick rink that year Wilf was the brilliant second player on this notable rink of the eventful 1956 season and he enjoyed reviewing some of the highlights with teammates Ted Thorington Clayton Parnaby Earl Lambe and Dr Baillie at Orillia recently Roy Hewitt and the late Stan Sarjeant were other members of this brilliant curling crew Opening bonspiel at Orillia rink First bonspiel of the season at the Orillia curling rink will be fiveevening affair opening on Monday met 17 This early competition was arranged and organized by its Fern Resort sponsors with nightly games planned for and sections starting at and pm with the finals slated for Friday Oct 26 The fall handicap competition makes special provision for new curlers and ones of limited curling experience in an ef fort to give all competing rinks chance to win the trophies and awards Club secretary Tom Caldwell reports it is an event which has stirred great interest in the past and is ex Barric Flyers goaltender Ron Patterson knocks shot away with his blocking two noted championships captured by Barrie rinks in the distant pas Back over half century ago in 1925 foursomes skipped by Bob Malcomson and Habbick won the allOntario Silver Tankard which is equivalent to the provincial senior championship in hockey it was explained Other players of this noted group which were the toast of portsmen in the county centre were Beelby Selvin Meredith Cameron Har ry Hook Simon andMatt Robertson Two of these billiant curlers Oliver Cameron and Selvin Meredith also were members of Barries famous 1928 crew which won the Royal York and North American trophy events at Toronto Doc Simon and Bill Griffith were other class players with the latter rink review of the records showed these championship crews were all whiz curlers The 1928 winners won 26 out of 32 games Redskins split games with Banting Memorial The Barrie Central Collegiate Senior Redskins are having trouble finding teams that belong on the same field as them Friday the Redskins pounded Banting Memorial High School 390 at Central The win gave them record of four wins and no losses this season In other high school football games Friday the Central Junior Redskins lost 1413 to Banting and the North Col legiate Senior Vikings drubbed Orillia Twin Lakes 161 The Senior Redskins got touchdowns from Paul Laking Tim Gleason Barry Norton Kevin OConnor and Dave Waldock in their win over Ban ting Norton kicked five extra points single and 35 yard field goal to round out the Scor ing The game was the third in row where the defence has refused to give up point In the junior contest
