20 the examlnor sourdoy Oocobor 1917 Crime Flashback Wicked Doctor Cream The 19205 have often been referred to as the golden age of sport Babe Ruth was clouting home runs while Jack Demp sey was clouting anyone who stood in his way In the murder business the period between 1880 and 1895 should be called the golden age of mayhem It gave rise to so many unusual murders chap known as Jack the Ripper who was never positively identified but who lives on infamy was roaming the streets of London cutting up ladies of the night On this side of the big pond Godfearing churchgoing New England lady Lizzie Borden was accused of chopping up her mommie and daddy with hat chet With the murder stage being so crowded with nefarious players it is no wonder that Dr Neill Cream never gained the notoriety he so richly deserved Neill first saw the li ht of day in Glasgow Scotlan in 1850 His family immigrated to Can da when he was five Nothing is known of his formative years other than that he applied himself diligently to his schoolwork and did exceedingly well throughout high school He continued on to McGill Univer sity in Montreal where he received his medical degree He later took post graduate work in London and Edinburgh before returning to Canada For the next five years Neill Cream led an eventful if somewhat jaded existence He set up practice in various Cana dian towns and cities but was always forced to stay on the move You see Creams medical standards were decidedly below the norm par ticularly when he was examin ing female patients In fact it wasnt an uncommon sight to see lady running out of Dr Creams office in state of un dress Finally he found the temp erature so unbearabl hot that he left Canada for cago in order to have more freedom to practice his particular brand of medicine In 1881 Cream went too far He gave huge quantity of strychnine to patient named Stott It is believed that the motive was two fold Stott had pretty wife whom the doctor was examining all the tune although her neighbors later stated that this was very strange since she was never sick day in her life It is believed to this day that Mrs Stott was involved with Cream in her husbands sudden demise At the time of Stotts death Cream was trying to place large insurance policy on the unfortunate mans life with himself as the beneficiary Stotts death at first was at tributed to natural causes Then Dr Cream did an ex traordinary thin which he continued to do roughout his criminal career He started writing letters He wrote to both the coroner and the dis trict attorney suggesting that Stotts body be exhumed Final ly at the anonymous urging of Cream the body was disinterr ed Upon examination it was found to be chock full of strychnine Dr Cream and Mrs Stott took off but were soon ap prehended and indicted for murder Mrs Stott cutie that she was testified for the state Charges against her were drop ped Cream was found guilty of second degree murder and was sentenced to life imprisonment In 1881 the prison gates of Joliet closed behind the strange doc tor but his career was far from over In 1891 after Cream had spent just under 10 years in prison Gov Fifer of Illinois commuted his sentence and Cream walked out of prison free man The governor had made horrendous error While he had been serving time in prison Creams father died leaving him an in heritance of $16000 veritable fortune before the turn of the century Cream picked the cash and headed for England arriving in London on Oct 1891 Whether it was the London fog or whatever Cream didnt waste any time pursuing his secondary occupation that of porsoner 19yearold prostitute Ellen Donworth let herself be picked up by Cream During the course of the evening her tail austere looking friend sporting topl hat offered her drink out of is flask She took two long drags on the bottle and almost immediately began to suffer from convulsions Her friend was nowhere to be found but neighbors called doctor who rushed the girl to the hospital She died on route An autopsy revealed that Ellen had died of strychnine poison ing The police had no clues to the poisoners identity but never ear our Dr Cream made sure that he received some of the recognition he craved He wrote to the coroner offer ing to reveal the killers identi ty in return for 300000 pounds The letter was signed OBrien The coroner tried to set up rendezvous but OBrienCream never showed pOne week after the Donworth murder another prostitute Matilda Clover was found in her room writhing in agony Her client for the evening man who called himself Fred had given her some pills Before she died she described Fred to friend who lived in the same house Fred was tall wellbuilt man who dressed in cape and tall silk hat For some reason Matildas death was thought to have been caus ed by alcholism but Cream would have none of it He dash ed off note to distinguished doctor accusing him of poison ing Matilda with strychnine The doctor took the letter to the police Other distinguished peo ple received letters accusing them of poisoning Matilda Because of the vertible shower of letters Matildas body was exhumed The cause of her death was attributed to strychnine Scotland Yard now realized that systematic killer was on the loose in Lon don The winter months drifted by without any further murders at the hands of the mysterious poisoner with an abnormal urge for revealing his crimes in letters Later when every move Cream made was review ed the reason he stopped poisoning prostitutes durin the winter months became ear He had taken trip to Canada where strangely enough he had printed 500 circulars copy of which follows ELLEN DONWORTHS DEATH To the guests of the Metropole Hotel Ladies and Gentlemen hereby notify you that the person who poisoned Ellen Donworth on the 13th last Oc tober is today in the employ of the Metropole Hotel and that your lives are in danger as you remain in this Hotel Yours respectfully Murray London April 1892 Dr Cream never used the rinted circulars and no one nows to this day why he had them printed They do serve to reveal Creams perverted obsession with publicity of any kind He wanted his crimes to cause excitement and be discussed With the coming of spring and with Cream back in England things started to per colate once again Emma Shrivell an 18year old prostitute and her friend Alice March lived in fumish ed flat near Waterloo Road In the middle of the night their screams woke theirlandlady Both girls were in great pain and convulsing violently Dur ing brief periods when their agony subsided they told of having distinguished gentleman as supper guest earlier that evening The gentleman wore tall top hat Times have in Ieisure BROMONT Que CP For 13 years this tiny Eastern Townships community enjoyed almost unfettered growth thanks to generous rovincial grants Today wit new government in power things have changed for the 4000 residents of leisure city The election 01 the Parti Quebecois last fall brought sudden end to funding from previous Liberal administra tion and led to the resignation of Mayor Germain Desourdy and his entire city council The new council was forced to called himself Fred and claim ed he was doctor The girls let him talk them in to taking some pills Alice March died before reaching the hospital while Emma Shrivell lingered for five hours before she toodied Quite by chance bobby walking his beat had seen the two girls let their guest out into the night He was able to pro vide full description The publicity surrounding these two deaths brought forth other ladies who had managed to escape the clutches of the mysterious Fred Lou Harvey told of preten ding to take the pills but unknown to Fred she had thrown them away Violet Bevereley refused drink of fered to her by the obliging Fred Both of these ladies gave detailed descriptions of their weird acquaintance to the police Then Dr Cream still craving notoriety did the ultimate He complained to Scotland Yard Using the name Dr Neill he told them that the lice were followin him an harassing him wit accusations that he was the killer of March and Shrivell The doctor told the Yard that he had nothing whatever to do with the crimes claiming that Dr Harper was the real culprit It is difficult to understand exactly why Cream would fur nish the police with information which would lead them to his doorstep It wasnt long before the aut orities discovered that Neill was really Cream Several of the surviving ladies identified him as the elusive Fred So did the bobb who has seen him leave Marc and Shrivells flat the night they died Dr Cream was 42 years old when he was adjudged to be legallv sane and placed on trial for murder On Nov 15 1892 he was hanged for his crimes With death only seconds away Creams sense of the dramatic was not to be denied As the trap door sprung open he yelled am Jack the RA Reporters ran to their files on ly to find out that Dr Cream had been securely locked up in Joliet when Iack was operating in London Dr Cream suffered his greatest indignity when over 80 years after his execution Madame Tussauds wax museum in London announced they were removing higewa image from their am horrors It seems there was decided lack of interest and anyway he wasnt scary enough changed ify raise property taxes as much as 500 per cent and For Sale The doctor says Nervous system playing tricks By GC THOSIESON MD Dear Dr Thosteson am 40 years of age For almost five years have had stomach and colon problems which are sometimes very ainful Results of xrays of upper and lower intestinal tract have been negative Im told have colitis and spastic colon In my bowel movements pass white and brown mucus and sometimes my stool is pencil size Although am taking tranquilizer prescribed by my doctors dont feel that he has explained fully the subject of colitis Is it caused by emotions Is there cure for it Is it very common7Mrs ME It appears to me that your nervous system may be playing tricks on you Bowel patterns often reflect emotional tension The problem is common among tense individuals and our hec tic society seems to be breeding disturbing number of those Another unfortunate source of this problem is what for want of better term we call bowel consciousness Some folks ex pect to have daily bowel move ments as predictable as the tides or sunsets These people often fall into laxative or enema routines which can ultimately bring real bowel problems Your xrays showed no struc tural problem The tranquilizer you are taking is to relax you and to relax the bowel muscles But that wont be the total an swer for you You may have to adjust your style of living You should try to eat normal diet Your stool indicates need for some bulk You can ask about some of the bulk producersrv agar dioctylsulfosuccinate bit of prune juice may help The condition is curable but the most important part of the cure is yourself Dear Dr Thosteson am 24 years old and have been using nasal spray on the average of three times day every day for seven ears find just cant reathe through my nose without it have been told recently that this is bad Do you think it is harmfulJSM You probably were told it is bad by longtime reader of this column Many can tell you this is one of my pet peeves Come to think of it its time for my annual warning about sprays Yes they can be dangerous The spray will shrink the nasal membranes and give you tem porary relief But it will also cause rebound and leave you right where you started The trick now is to taper of the use gradually You may be sur prised to find you can breathe without it You got into the habit when you were 17 and didnt know any better At 24 you should re alizc that hiding problem as whatever caused your initial breathing difficulty is not go ing to solve anything You may have chronic sinus trouble that needs attention Or you may have nasal obstruction that can be treated An allergy food dust animalsl can be cause Dear Dr Thosteson Are girls more likely to be myopic than boysGA They are more likely to de velop myopia near sightcdnessl earlier than boys but as
