County Sports Pro hockeyist for 10 years BILL CURRAN Now playing his second season with Barrie Flyers in the Ontario Senior circuit veteran Wayne Carleton had 10 eventful years as hockey pro before joining the local team The Beeton native started in pro with Punch lmlachs Toronto Leafs after moving up from the Marlboroughs in junior ranks back in 196566 In one of his first National Hockey League games he received great deal of credit for assisting Frank Mahovlich for an important goal Still of junior age at the time Wayne was sent to Tulsa Oilers in the Central Professional loop for more pro ex ggzience The former Beeton player who learned to play key in the Simcoe County sportsminded village shone for the Oilers in the playoffs when he registered three goals and four assists in five games Carletons finalround hockey displays at Tulsa earned him chance to show his wares to Punch lmlach at Leafs camp the following fall In making good with the Leafs he showed the same fast skating and sharpshooting skill he ex hibited at Tulsa Then he ran into series of troubles which hampered him considerably for time Knee injuries required three opera elbow But despite the handicaps which would have kept less courageous player on the sidelines Carleton continued to play sometimes with the Leafs Rochester farm club and with the Toronto NHL team With Canadas International Team ck in 1969 Carleton was one of several players the Lea loaned to the Canadian hockey team which par ticipated in an international tournament in Europe After training at Winnipeg Wayne travelled with the team to Leningrad where he missed two games because of other games Finland and Switzerland with Carleton again playing star roles But when he returned home he had to miss the first part of the NHL season because of injuries Later he was traded to the then champion Boston Bruins where he performed with Bobby Orr Phil Esposito and other noteable stars The rugged forward now with the Bar rie club came through again with flying colors racking up 22 goals and 23 assists for 45 scoring points When the NHL was expanding Carleton was one of the players transferred to the western division California Golden Seals where his drive and scoring ability continued to impress hockey fans Some rated Carletons best season was in 1973 when he was shifted to the World Hockey Association and led the Toronto Toros in scoring points He also had fine scoring records with New England Whalers in helping them win the WHA honors before going west again during his eventful pro career Curlers getting ready for busy season Barrie curling enthusiasts are currently getting ready for another active season at the Essa Road rink where first schedules are due to start later this month Secretary Frank Hersey has been busy registering members and president Murdie Campbell and colleagues on the executive has been assisting in preparations Plans for the fast approaching curling season will be discussed by members of the Orillia curling club at meeting to follow banquet at the West Street rink in the neighboring city on Thursday evening Manager Tom Caldwell who is top curler himself who skipped an Orillia rink to the Ontario Consols title few years ago also drew attention to arrangements for instruc tion for new curlers next Friday and Saturday evenings First bonspiel for men will be five Ontario Senior Hockey League The Flyers dumped the Whitby Iroquois 75 Friday night at the Barrie Arena It was the first home game of the season for the Flyers after dropping two games in Thunder Bay last weekend Wayne King netted air of goals while defenceman Jim Thompson had goal an two assists Paul Regan assisted on three goals for the Flyers Gord Coates assistant Flyers coach said after the
