Midland finally chooses centennial officer MIDLAND Special After Weeks of wrangling Midland finally has centennial com misswner Midland council Thursday afternoon accepted the centen nial committees recommenda tion to appoint Henry McLeod to the position at salary of $12000 for the next 15 months 1978 marks the 100th anniver sary of Midlands founding It was the second time coun oil had considered recommen dation to appoint McLeod hav ing rejected it the first time Some councillors felt the salary was excessive and the term of office too long The mo tion to acce McLeod passed by vote of ree to two Receive final approval for $243326 grant BARCLAY Innisfil Township Council has learned thatfinal approval has been received from Wintario for grant of $243326 towards the construction costs of the StroudInnisfil Community Centre The grant will cover about onethird of the nearly $800000 construction cost However the township will get only $60000 of the total grant immediately with the balance to follow later Recreation coordinator Larry Morrow said the grant was split up that way because the township submitted two grant applications The first was for about $60000 he said while the second application sought about $340000 The meeting was marked by an incident in which Deputy Reeve William Ogilvie stormed out of the meeting before discussion began Ogilvie reacted strongly to statement made two days before the meeting by Midlands Mayor Moreland Lynn to the effect that the meeting would be conducted in committee of the whole Ogilvie claimed that council must vote to so declare meeting and that the rules of order were not being followed He labelled the meeting as il legal and for that reason he walked out Coun Kathe Jans chairman of the parks and recreation committee said she is happy to hear the grant has finally been approved but not going to celebrate yet until see the cheque Sues province TORONTO CP An On tario civil servant is suing the rovince and two medical County are drenched after getting twice their usual rainfall in September but it doesnt mean disaster yet But if Mondays sunshine proves temporary and the area gets another week of rain it could mean serious damage to two of the coun tys most important crops corn and potatoes The weather has made it impossible for farmers to get on with the harvest and unless conditions improve both crops are in danger of rotting in the fields The rain that weve had in the past week has made the situation fairly serious says Clint Nesbitt provincial agricultural representative for NorthSimcoe The fields are super saturated and hard to get on with machinery Itll take about week of drying weather for the farmers to get back on the fields Silage corn should be more than half harvested by now Nesbitt says but because of the rain less than 10 per cent of the crop is in Grain corn is not due for harvesting until later and can if necessary be har vested as late as December if the ground is not covered with snow before freezeup But Nesbitt says as much as 10 cent of the crop has alrea been lost due to rot ting from water and another week of rain could push that figure to 25 per cent In addition says Ronald Coutts of the North Simcoe Soil and Crop Association some poorlydrained heavy clay land is already so wet that no amount of dry weather will permit farmers to get their corn harvested POTATOES Some potatoes in lowlying areas have rotted says potato farmer Dave Leach of the Alliston area but 40 per cent of the crop has been harvested and he still hopes to get in most of the rest However heavy ground frost will ruin the crop and every day rain keeps har vesters off the fields brings the frost closer Were not beat yet Leach said Monday but if we get another week of rain well really lose lot Hay too is in poor shape in some areas Jo Rutten of the South Simcoe Soil and Crop Association says he had good third cutting but couldnt get it in and its rotting in the field Other crops appear to be in better shape Robert Hamilton of the Simcoe County Wheat Pro ducers says most grain crops were harvested successfully what hasnt been is lost Hamilton said good 90 yet per cent of winter wheat has already been planted and is expected to do well but again what hasnt been planted already is write off APPLE CROP The apple crop could suffer if bad weather kee pickers away until apples eteriorate or freeze but grower John Koole of Shanty Bay says the harvest is only about two days behind at present since growers dont rely on heavy equipment like field crop farmers and he is still ex pecting successful crop And theres some good news even for the corn crop Tom Smith president of the Simcoe County Federa tion of Agriculture says 10 to 15 per cent of the countys corn was planted or ger minated late due to dry spr ing and would not have matured if the first frost had come in midSeptember as usual But the end of the month came and went with no frost and the late corn will mature after all For those farmers who do lose crops theres always crop insurance but Drury of Crown Hill who sells it says only about 25 per cent of Simcoe County farmers are covered al though the number is grow ing For those who have it the insurance covers crop costs but not lost income Tenders to be called for wharf Ray Conltf Anne Murray Andy Williams CKBB RADIO 950 GREAT um WITH ii£w
