ma Hlt the examiner Frldy8pt so 1011 More than $200 year can be saved by proper insulation of The average homeowner can save over $200 year at current world oil prices by properly re insulating his home says Alistair Gillespie federal minister of energy mines and resources In larger or more poorly insulated homes the savings could be considerably higher he says On average Canadian residential heating consump tion can be economically reduc ed by over 35 per cent he said in ministry booklet printed this year Federal and provincial energy officials are urging homeowners to reinsulate their houses install storm windows and use weatherstripping to cut energy consumption and cost Both Ontario Hydro and Gillespies energy conservation office have released pamphlets on how to reinsulate your home and deal with contractors All say the cost of insulation will pay itself back within five years through energy savings Ontario Hydro says most work upgrading insulation can be done by homeowners with few special tools No special skills or training is necessary says booklet released this summer In some circumstances and with specialized materials or equipment however contrac tors are needed In most houses in Barrie heat is lost not only through the attic 10 to 20 per cent of total heat loss in housei but walls 15 to 30 per cent wmdows and doors 120 to 25 per centi ventilation 125 to per ttflll and basements to to 23 per cent Government offiCials have set minimum levels for tnsula tion in all parts of your house in terms of values precise measurement of an in sulation materials resistance to heat transfer Few eXisting houses have the minimum standards with their present insulation say energy offiCIals There are four basic types of insulation most commonly us ed batts and blankets loose fill rigidfoam plastic and foamedinplace plastics Loose fill is often used to re insulate existing home ceilings and comes in bags When pro perly used it leaves few air gaps but has tendency to set tle over the years and leave gaps at the top of wall cavities Batts and blankets usually come prepackaged and are generally used to insulate frame or brick houses They come with or without vapor barriers Rigidfoam plastic insulation comes in panels of different sizes and thicknesses and has the advantages of high insula tion value with minimum thickness and vapor barrier Foamedinplace plastics such as polyurethane or polystyrene are now recognized as severe fire hazards when us ed in exposed or semiexposed applications It can be used inside if con vered by three uarter inch plaster or gypsum oard on the outside of concrete masonry or wood frame walls inside masonry cavity walls under concrete floor slabs or as roof insulation applied above the structural deck Ureaformaldehyde low flammability foam is an effec tive way of insulating older homes ATTIC INSULATION if youve decided to re insulate your attic yourself you will need temporary lighting and flooring tool to move in sulation into places around caves and heavy duty shears good quality tape and heavy duty staple gun are also needed if you plan to install vapor barrier to prevent moisture from damaging ex isting insulation For safety ensure good lighting lay boards over your joists or trusses to provide walkway wear hard hat to avoid any protruding nails wear gloves and breathing mask if you use glass or mineral fibre and keep the material wrap until you are ready to put it into place To insulate install your tem porary flooring and lighting check for leaks in your roof and repair any you find Also check for any obvious air leaks and seal all places where pipes and wires penetrate the attic floor Seal around ceiling light fixtures the tops of inside walls chimneys and hatches Caulking oakum and polyethylene scraps are recom mended by Ontario Hydro although the polyethylene should be kept away from any direct sources of heat such as light fixtures At the eaves caution should be taken to keep the insulation from blocking ventilation and or disappearing into the cave space Batt insulation or wood baffle can be used If there is an eXisting vapor barrier patch any obvious breaks and then add insulation If you are using batts On tario Hydro advises you buy the friction fit type with no at tached barrier If all you can buy is the builtin vapor barrier type place the barrier on the upper side and slash it with knife to allowtheairto pass Barriers should never be placed on top of existing insula tion tinder some cir cumstances it may be necessary to lift the insulation and put barrier under ll BASEMENT IVSIIAIION Before tackling insulation in your basement caulk any cracks between the foundation and sill Io insulate your basement you will need saw hammer and nails drill Willi con crete bit heavy duty staple gun tape measure heavy duty shears and knife level top tional small sledge hammer and masonry nails and good quality tape compatible with polyethylene For safety treat any damp walls below the ground With waterproof chemical before starting or even better cover that portion with black tarred felt building paper as moisture barrier The simplest way to install it is to attach the felt paper to the header joist at the top so Xir tion of the barrier above the ground can be partially cut away to allow trapped moisture to escape Then extend the sheeting to the floor until the bottom edge stretches under the bottom plate of the framework and back up to the top of the plate Install the insulation tightly between your studs If you are ustng rigid insulation be careful to keep it away from any flame source When batts with an at tached barrier are used staple the flanges to the studs overlapping when possible Otherwise install the polyethylene vapor barrier along the inside face of the studs using staples All joints should be overla ped six inches and tapedaswell You can then apply the batt as 28t2 insulation with flanges of your attached vapor barrier stapled down if you have serious moisture problem leave four to sixinch space between the bottom plate and insulation and wrap the bottom plate in polyethylene If moisture is no problem caulk the crack between the bottom plate and floor to pre vent air entry Finally nail up the finishing surface which must be gypr sum board plaster or other flame retardent materials if rigid insulation was used If the wall space is inter rupted by pipes ducts or elec trical boxes or outlets push the insulation and barrier behind the obstructions if possible so they sit on the warm side Turn off the power before worlnng around electrical areas If there are obstructions that generate significant quantities of heat dont insulate around it Hydro officials say it is bet ter to allow the heat to escape then build up potentially dangerous heat levels Where there is window seal the point where the frame ad joins the wall with caulking compound and insulate Storm windoWs should be lit stalled in your newlyinsulated basement single pane of glass loses about 12 times as much heat as the same area of properly insulated wall WALL INSULATION Insulating walls is more dif fictilt and more expensive than attics or basements If you plan on extensive renovation of your insulation you can remove the laster or wallboard and reinsu ate using as much insulation as the stud space will accept If you are working on wall that has been framed push blankets into the stud spaces so they touch the siding Work from the top down placing staples 12 inches apart With friction fit batts or blankets with vapor barriers wedge them into place and then tF Less was 502 or WALL ABOVE 228 62005 cover the inside face of the wall with suitable vapor barrier such as polyethylene stapled to top and bottom plates Unroll the sheet across the entire wall area including win dow and door openings Fit insulation behind pipes ducts and electrical boxes packing space with loose in sulation Stuff other pieces bet ween rough framing and door and window heads jamhs and sills Staple barrierpaper or polyetliylent to cover these small areas If you have nonstandard width studs or joist spaces
