iuls fasuaéylgx Cofsgot hbtongue By WERNER BERGEN Examiner Sports Editor Whis is Steve Cripp walking around like the cat who just swallowed the budgie bird The cat of course had the bird in his mouth the team may just wear out the ice at the Barrie Arena betore the season starts The coaches have been juggling lines during the training camp and passing plays are starting to click In fact some rushes up ice are starting to look impressive There is no doubt about it the Flyers will not finish in fourth place tlllS year MAKINGIMIRESSIVESHOWING The Junior Colts under Howie Forbes are also making an impressive showing in training camp Iorbcs is thc new coach of the Barrie entry into the MidOntario Junior League The team will have relatively young team and manager Doug Raymond is players at the teams practises with LG of them returning players frotii last year Bradley said the players who were returning were top players as were the juniors and made for lot of experience There are also three players in camp Our strongest point has always been our defence Bradey said Most of them are back from last year PROBLEMS The club does have problem in the quarterback position Bradey said the club did not have any returning quarter backs and no junior passer showed up to camp We have to find new quarterback Bradey said new Fyers hope for strong l977 team The Banic Flyers are less than month away from its On tario Hockey Association Senior Hockey League season opener and the club promises to be one of the strongest Barrie has ever prtxluced We are having just super camp this season and there is great amount of talent here Steve Cripps manager of the team said Monday It really doesnt matter who we cut there is someone else ready to fill the hole The only area Cripps is con cerned about is the goalten ding Ernie Miller and Ron Pat terson are expect ed to make the team and Cripps isnt sure they will be good enough LASI SIGNED The goaltenders will pro bably be the last people signed before we break camp he said Miller and Patterson didnt give us good consistent goaltending last year and thats what you need to win the Allan fup it doesnt matter if you have Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito on the ice you cant win without gqod goaltending Cripps add er While the goaltending is problem for the team every other position appears stronger than last season STRONG MIDDLE The club appears to be deep tll centrenien with Wayne arlcton and Paul Regan retur ning from last year and Bob Wasson leading the list of newcomers Wasson played with York University for the past two years and was the clubs leading scorer He has been named to the all Canadian team twice and has played junior hockey under Roger Neilson at Peter borough He is one of our biggest sur prises this season Cripps said He moved to Barrie ast year so we dont have to worry about trying to find him job Bob Baird Gary MacMillian and Gary Lyte from last years team along with newcomers Ron Lyte Don Westbrooke and Wayne King are vying for jobs on right wing IMPRESSIVE Wayne King is the most im pressive of the newcomers and is sure bet to make the club if he stays in Barrie There is possibility he may be picked up by another pro team after playing last season with the Cleveland Barons of the National Hockey Lague He didnt get new contract last season so he decided to come up here Cripps said Were really excited about him TAVELLA EXPECTED When the name John Tavella is mentioned Cripps finds it hard to control his enthusiasm Flyers picked the leftwinger from the defunct Collingwood Blues of the Southern Ontario Junior Hockey Association and he has been more than they ex pected What can you say about that guy He has all the tools you need to be good hockey player He can shoot pass and he uses his head Cripps said The only problem is that he is so good he has attracted the at tention of pro scouts and has already received two invita tions to ro camps We ont really know where he stands right now but if he is leaving we want him to go now and not just hang around get players cut Steve Cripps general manager of the Barrie Flyers of the On tario Hockey Assomation Senior Hockey League announced this morning that the club has cut four players from its training camp roster Dave Payman Jim MacPherson Dou Posie and Terry Gregory were the players out after Mondays workout Gregory was one of because of his size the clubs draft picks and was released Hed get killed in this league Cripps said The club still has 31 players before the Bay against the Twins players in camp and must cut another 10 club opens the schedule Oct in Thunder ting free ice time he said think we can give him better training up here The coaches up here are so much better than those in semipro hockey Other leftwingers vying for jobs are Phil Branston the clubs third leading scoerer last season Les Burgess and newcomer John Hammond Hammond just came into camp yesterday Cripps said We hope to turn him pro next season Hes only 20 vears nld All of last seasons defencemen are returning again and Darryl Sly the playercoach of the club will likely lace on the blades for another season Darryl is still undecided about playing this season but expect him to play Hell pro bably be used as sixth defenceman Cripps expects the club to have an average age of about 25 and for the first time in the clubs existence it isnt having any players from Toronto For the first season in long time the club is in strong bargaining position and wont be forced to pay big money to players who decide to hold out We are so strong this season that we wont have to hand out any big contracts Cripps said If players hold out well just give them their walking papers and sign the next guy in line We cant go wrong The club is sponsoring Flyer Fest Friday at the Sun nidale Cormnunity Centre star ting at pm It consists of dance followed by corn roast Slessor topples Foods takes semifinals 40 The playoffs are whole
