WV County sports Motors pilots still cautious By BILL CURRAN Although Orillia Majors are currently leading three games to none coaches Gander Ross and Tex Howard arent taking anything for granted in the Simcoe County baseball finals with Alliston Canucks We still have to win another game to take the champion ship remarked pilot Ross Ball games are won on the field and theres always chance of an upset Thats exactly my view too interjected Howard who like Ross was one of the leagues best hitters until he retired as player to coach Originally scheduled for Sunday afternoon the fourth game of the series has been rearranged for Riverdale Park diamond at Alliston on Monday evening win for the Ma jors would give them sweep of the series but if the Canucks can turn the tide at home fifth game will be played at Orillia with tentative date Thursday evening Righthanders Jerry Udell and Peter Koehli and southpaw Mel St Onge were given credit by their coaches for fine mound peifdrmancesin Orillials first three wins Udell hurled threehitter in to victory in the series opener when Nick Owen of Barrie socked homer Udell yielded all three hits and two runsin the first frame and then blanked the Canucks the rest of the way without hit or run He chalked up 10 strikeouts in the process In the second tilt Keohli almost matched Udells achieve ment with five hitter as Majors came from behind to deficit to register close to decision at Alliston Koehli smashed homer for the winning run It was then the turn of southpaw St Onge who came up with his best pitching of the season in the Majors to home triumph Larry Halbert was the losing pitcher for second time although Barry Greer finished on the mound Former Barrie player Pat Hennessy belted three hits in three times at bat Doner hopes for better breaks Manager of the Alliston Canucks Bob Do er said he had hoped his Canucks would get better breaks first county title since 1968 That to loss was tough one for us he said pointing out his team was in front to at one stage and going strong We should have won that one In reaching the finals the Canucks did better than generally ex cted although the veteran manger had warn ed his team ad been steadily improving Alliston baseball fans were elated by the teams victory over the favored Ivy Leafs in the semifinals Right now we are thinking about the fourth game and well be out to win this time said manager Doner referr ing to Monday nights contest Veteran Scott Morrison Richard Kerr and pitcher Barry Greer are the three leading batsmen for the Canucks Peter Doner at first and brother Jim in the outfield both sons of the manager also have been having good baseball seasons younger brother Art 15 was 12th in batting iii the North Dufferin league and is expected to join the Canucks next year Doner hasnt decided to start Halbert again or give Greer the assignment for Mondays game Barry was top pitcher for Mansfield in the North Dufferin circuit Pitcher Chris Darling 20
