CRTC OKs proposed sale of stations OTTAWA tCP The pro posed sale of six Ontario broad casting stations to firm con nected with the Quebecbased Power Corp the second largest conglomerate in the country has been approved by the Cana dian RadioTelevision and Tele communications Commission it was announced Friday It is the first time Power Corp company has bought broadcasting outlet in Ontario CRTC official said Power Corp holds extensive interests in Quebec including two Montreal daily newspapers two TV stations and four radio stations Power Corp headed by Paul Desmarais also has extensive holdings in other companies Under terms of the approved sale company called 81028 Canada Ltd will buy 100 per cent of the shares of AM radio station CKWS CKWSTV and CFMKFM all in Kingston as well as CHEXAM CHEXTV and CFMPFM three Peter Whatever next By DOUGLAS GREENWOOD Science and Technology Correspondent Big green monsters dont have to come from outer space theyre growing right here on earth And if detergent makers hadnt changed their product formulas some twelve years ago our green slimy monsters would be foaming at the mouth soto speak These potential green monsters are our freshwater lakes The green slime is what is known as algae an elemen tary form of plant life When pool of water small or large exists for short or long perods of time depending on its depth it becomes contaminated with nutriants such as phosphorous and nitrogen It may sound like contradiction to call nutrition contamination but in lake anything that causes plantlife to grow in the water is actually form of contamination because clear clean water should stay that way MANMADE There are actually two ways that lakes can become over nourished by the natural pro cess of rain runoff from sur rounding areas where plant and animal life abounds and by manmade pollution from phosphaterich sewage Even without human society all but the deepgst lf lakes would even tually come green swamps but our present industrial lifestyle is accelerating the pro cess Both nitrogen and phosphorous occur naturally but these tend to be removed when water containing such pollutants seeps through the soil before entering the lakes When sewage containing laun dry wastes is drained into rivers and lakes however which is the casein much of our modern world the pollutants build much faster than was the case before civilization brought modern plumbing The chief culprit is phosphorous In detergents it is put there to soften the water and bind the dirt and grease that comes out of the clothes Industrial poisons such as mercury chromium oil etc are another problem altogether and in sense not so serious Phosphorous is not needed in ii quid detergents for dishes and handwashed fabrics because the eye guides the hands to the worst spots that need little ex tra rubbing to clean them But with the coming of automatic washing machines including dishwashers it became necessary to add phosphate in high enough proportion to en sure that all dirt and grease spots were removed by moderate agitation Prior to 1959 detergents con tained certain compounds that did not change their chemical nature even in sewage treatment plants These com pounds were not biov degradable and because of this they even got into municipal watersupply systems Billows of foam ap peared on public fountains until they took on the appearance of large openair laundry tubs Dirty brown blowing foam from sewagetreatment plants was particularly alarming sight Even drinking water began to come foaming into the glass from taps in some cities TSP or souium iripnosphate is still put into detergents but in much smaller quantities Since 1972 under the Canada Water Act only 22 per cent of phosphorous is allowed in Can dian detergents Sewage treat ment plants in many localities also remove phosphorous Barries has done so for the last five years One substitute for TSP In detergents is known as NTA nitrilotriacetate acid and along with TSP they both are now revealed as the miracle ingredients so dear to detergent Esau makers Because of an intense spotlight of enquiry into the ef fects of NTA on both our en vironment and health how ever there is some doubt as to whether NTA will continue to replace phosphorous in washingmachine powders Pro ctor and Gamble for instance who had placed orders for $167000000 of NTA wrote off $7100000 in cancelled orders for NTA continuing study started in Sweden and Canada is going on and not enough will be known about possible bad ef fects on humans and the ecology until many years hence Arthur Little Inc large research company have already found traces of NTA in drinking water in communities on Long Island NY and several Ontario cities The con cern is that cancer malformed babies and increased poisonous effects from heavy metals already present in lakes may eventually occur as result of NTA pollution There is hope that the process of lakes changing into thick morasses of peasouplike ap pearance can be stopped or reversed by the limnologists who study the behavior of lakes and might be regarded as lake doctors Eutrophication is word used by them to describe what happens when lakes become able to support plant life Its hopeful sign that Girls and Boys High River Alta High River is the hometown of Joe Clark and is 40 miles south of Calgary lhe races phosphorouspollution control Swimminhole trouble Shallow swimming holes are particularly prone to eutrophication If you have one thats turning into little green portance have by means of skillful measures been revers ed in their eutrophieation pro cess where it had been speeded up by manmade pollution Among them are the Lake of Zurich in Switzerland Lake Erie Lake Washington and eludes author
