student visa getting clothes ready and buying small gifts to exchange with people over there like key chains bookmarks flags and Canadian pins But Laurie is looking forward to the experience Part of the exchange program is that Laurie will be living with four different Dutch families over the year just recently received letter from my first family welcoming me to Holland describing Dordrecht to me and what to expect thought that was really thoughtful Also Mr Bells my Rotary Counsellor while Im in Holland called the other morning He sounded so warm and friendly Im really looking forward to Ann tell those nurses not to blame the patient if he gets bit randy Nurses who want to be respected should strive to look professional and not sexy Thank God for pantsuitsGM Of Santa Monica Dear Santa Im not about to open up THAT can of wor ms againbut thanks for your letter Dear Ann Lenders In answer to Mrs USA who wants know how we can get families away from TV let me say is It is better to have your husband home watching TV than to wonder if he is out with another woman down at the bar getting drunk or at gambling place losing his badly needed pay cheque It is better to have your son at home in front of the boob tube than to wonder if he is out smoking dope drunk behind the wheel of car committing vandalism or maybe even mugging and raping Your daughter cant get into too much trouble at home glued to the idiot box Two thousand years ago woman cut off John the Bap tists head and put it on platter Herod had sword run through all male children under two years of age An angry mob put crown of thorns on Jesus head and nailed him to cross None of them got the idea from watching TV But of course youll never print thisLM Annoyed Dear LR Annoyed The networks will love you Heres your letter Dear Ann Landers In response to the letter from $10000 Worth of Woman person whose life is to be insured must Sign an appli cation for the coverage unless he or she is minor or other wise lacks the capacity to contract Among other things the signature of the insured signifies his or her consent to the insurance policy which is ob tained on the life of another person without his or her knowledge or express consent is illegal fraudulent and voidable smart husband may be one who insures his wife but if he surprises her with policy smart wife had better ask him tor the insurance companyi how he managed to obtain it without her knowledge and consentoncerned Home Of fice Lnderwriter Dear Concerned checked with several insurance com panies in Chicago and was told your information is fun damentallv correct in fact the insured person must not only Sign the application but must be seen by the agent even minor lloweverand heres the loopholea small insurance company might allow the husband to fill out the forms in ad Vance without paying for the policy and present an UN SltiNEl policy to his wife as gift The policy would be valid only if signed Erma Bombgck Supermarkets combat mission There is some talk that the drivmg age of shoppers oper ating supermarket carts is being raised to 33 should know Im doing the talking Going to the supermarket used to be an adventure Today it combat mission As was telling my friend Gloria the other day over pro dUcc Its jungle out there what Wlth all the young in experienced drivers and little old ladies who only drive shopping cart on Sundays after church know said Gloria did you see thaLteenager just speed by Barrelling up and down the aisle hoisting soft drink to her lips When will they ever learn drink and shop ping carts do not mix Mint about the mother over there cautioned mean is she menace She has three children in the cart line is eating the top off cereal box one throwing raw potatoes in the aisle of traffic and the other one sucking the pot mast she couldnt possibly be looking where she is going if that isnt the truth5ighed Gloria was following senior citizen dow pickles and spices She was going along at browsing speed so figured it was safe to pass At the end of the aisle she made sharp left and nearly ended up in the facial tissue lmmmm nodded What about the careless shoppers who leave their carts unattended for some young joy riders to steal and run the wheels off know what you mean said Gloria Or the woman ho stopped dead in front of me to fix wheel that was going the wrong way That is bore though Gloria when three weels want to shop and the other one wants to go to the parking lot guess but she could have pulled over to the side to maki repairs Is it my imagination asked Or do there seem to be more men in the aisles today They really shouldnt let them drive in supermarket until theyve had experience in dis count house or garden centre Theyre inclined to panic and fall apart the first time theyre rammed in the side noticed that Well its back to the wars Wheres your car iner there in front of meats blocking traffic Wheres yours linc was towed away from the centre of the aisle 20 min utes go Actually its the only way to get through this traf Tsi Pollys pointers Old oil on table LML will cause fog DEAR PULLY Even though there was tablecloth on my antique dining table when put cup of hot tea on the table the heat left dull ring The polish used on it did not work so wonder if anyone has any suggestions for removmg this dull spot VlRS DEAR Mrs WK Often such fog or bloom on polished furniture may be from the oil in an older var nish finish Apply liquid wax to remove the oil and then try polishing as usual Perhaps this will also help Helen who has dull spot on one of the benches she uses at her highly polished birch harvest table POLLY DEAR POLLY Often we throw away used tube of lipstick when there is lot left in the bottom that we cannot get out One way to salvage this remaining lipstick is to use toothpick to scrape out all that remains in the bottom and then ptit it in used lipstick pot the kind one puts on With the fingersi and apply it With lipstick brush Dotng this none is wasted NANCY DEAR POLLY You Will get better crease when press ing trousers by first usmg damp cloth Before the cloth is completely dry replace it With sheet of heavy Wiapping paper and go over the creases again When putting sweaters away roll them instead of folding them There are no creases when you are ready to wear them EZLESTIE DEAR POLLY The glass dome in the lid of my aluminum coffee pot came loose and was always falling out which was most annoying After testing many ways to help this finally placed strip of aluminum foil around the lid opening put the glass dome in and it fits perfectly and holds securely When hand sewing with double thread the thread often knots find moistening the threads lightly holds them together and sewmg is much pleasanter MRS
