ex pected to amount to about $750 million At the Immecafe laboratory the tasters go through their daily ritual of sorting toasting grinding brewing and tasting coffee samples to make sure ex Jobcreation plan lures 11400 young TORONTO CP More than 11400 young people across Ontario are participating in the provincial governments surn mer job creation program Ex perience 77 Cindy Greeniaus volved lasting from eight to 14 weeks paying an average wage of $3 an hour FOLLOW STUDY LINES Projects are created and su pervised by various ministries and are designed to enhance young persons work or educa tion experiences while providing community services Its an ideal situation for law student to get job in legal aid clinic Miss Green iaus said We have medical students working as ambulance drivers and theatre students working at the Shaw Festival Other projects include clean up operations helping the el derly and the handicapped and helping out in art galleries li braries museums the Toronto Symphony and the Hamilton Philharmonic No age limit is placed on the participants but they are usu ally 1510 24 years old Both stu dents and those in the labor for ce are involved Of students beaten and mull lated with knife After the murder Maria Rasputin and her younger sister were sheltered by the czar until his abdication in 1917 when the two girls fled to Siberia Maria manied Russian of ficer The couple left Russia and went to Europe where her husband died of tuberculosis in 1926 Maria became cabaret dan cer in Bucharest because of my name not because of my dancing She learned to train wild animals and joined the Ringling Bros Circus in 1935 She came In the United Slates two years later She settled in Los Angeles in 1947 and worked briefly in the San Pedro ship yards Since retiring she gives Russian language lessons works as parttime nurses aide and babysits ports maintain standard of excellence Nine tasters including CaS tillo and Garcia sit around re volvingtables tiued with coffee cups snlffing sipping and spill ingloudly No marks for table manners here said Garcia ASSESS QUALITY Garcia the chief taster and head of Immecafes quality control department said they test hundreds of amples of cof fee day from various parts of the country By just tasting it we can tell that its new or an old har vest where it comes from what defects if any it has and how these can be remedied he said Samples which do not meet exacting standards for aroma bodyand aciditybittemess to ordinary coffee drinkersare earmarked for domestic con sumption The key part of the process is the tasting and skilled tasters can go through dozens of cups 1n less than 30 seconds The proeedure involves plae mg 035 ounces of freshly ground coffee in cup of boiling water taking spoonful and slowlyrtipping it back into the Doesnt cup while sniffing constantly When the mixture coo Slightly the taster takes an other spoonful sips it with gurgle then spits the liquid out forcefully DO WITIIOUT BREAKFAST Castillo said Mexican coffee ranks third or fourth ill the world for its flavor and aroma Asked how the tasters keep their taste buds in shape Gar cia said Well we try to smoke and drink as little as possible and keep off highly spiced foods He said tasters generally re port for work without eating breakfast to have clean pal ales After two or three hours on the job we have snack and glass of milk to rejuvenate our taste buds and then its back to work Although the tasters are in undated with coffee every day they still enjoy cup now and then for relaxation Coffee should actually be taken black to enjoy its flavor said Castillo But when we drink it at home or with friends we always add milk and sugar It helps us to escape the fegling of always being on the J0 far for his fishing REGINA CP Fishing is Jim Dwyers passion He doesnt have to travel far to satisfy that passion he can do it virtually in his backyard Dwyer along with five frien dsoperales five ponds in the Regina area which they stuck with trout fingerlings every spring They are private 0p erators using the ponds for sport fishing lhewhole idea is really for group of guys to get together for sport fishing and fun Dwyer said in an interview And its Convenient To get them naturally youd have to go to Cypress Hills 0r Hanson Lake or Meadow Lake Instead Dwyer and friends face just short drive out of the city after work or on Saturday morning to waiting pond brimming with rainbow trout Dwyer has one of 1460 pri vate troutfarm licences issued in Saskatchewan in 1977 There are also 36 commercial oper alions The private operators dont sell the trout they raise Its hobby providing sport and relaxation Initially 1000 fingerlings were stocked in each pond but Dwyer said he has no idea how many fish are in each pond now When it comes to restock ing we play it by car This year $400 worth of fin gerlings were stocked About four inches long when first in troduced lo the ponds the fin gerlings can reach fool in 35 indian fa length within five or six mon lbs The fish are purchased from one of six distributors in the province who in turn buy them from halcheries III the United States Most come from Idaho CANADA SLOW Trout halcheries have been slow to develop in Canada mainly because of the climate The temperature of most spring water in Idaho is 50 degrees ideal for growing trout In Sas krlchewan the temperature of most spring water is 40 lo 42 degrees The distributor delivers the fish in zlereuted plastic bags or specially converted lilnkS that maintain certain raler tem perature and provide adequate oxygen for the fingerlillgs The ponds have to be res tocked every year because trout wunt spawn in such un natural conditions They need flowing clear water and san dy and rocky bottom Whether the trout survive the winter depends on the depth of the pond If its small dugout about 15 feet deep the fish wont survive llwyers borrow pits up to 25 or 30 feet deep provide enough oxygen and room for the trout to make it Although the pits are teem ing with trout it doesnt guar antee catch every time out Some days six guys could come out fish all day and catch nothing Dwyer said The next day you come and get 12 incher right away milies moving to new home By GREG MeGARRY SCHUYLER FALLS NY AP An estimated 35 Indian families will settle near this northern New York state com munilyof 3000 around Aug as part of an agreement with the state giving them exclusive hunting and fishing rights in portions of two state parks The Indians most of them Mohawks claim much of north ern New York and Vermont un der an 18thcentury treaty with the United States Under the new agreement they are leav ing Eagle Bay in central New York where about 300 Indians have occupied state campsite for three years The tourist trade will be greatly increased by our pres ence said Kakwirakeron spokesman for Indians who will set up model village where their traditional lifestyle can be shown to visitors The settlers will have hunting Gives new hope to the battered HAMILTON CPI An ex perimental program in this city is giving new hope to battered children and their parents Joan Rogers coordinator of family services for the Chil drens Aid Society said in re cent interview that under the program volunteer foster par ents are working to break the family chain of child abuse She said the yearold program has parents of bat tered children spend three hours three times week in the foster home where their children are living Under the supervision of the foster parents they take care of their children feeding bathing and playing with them When the children return home or stay in their home sit uation the foster parents came in to the home to help the par ents cope The program has grown like Topsy said Ms Rogers Some people feel abusin par ents should be punish We think the parents should be helped We find the majority of abu sive parents have been battered children They are bringlng up their children the only way they know how with abuse She said there is little struc ture to the parenting sessions First the foster parents get to know the problem family and strike up friendship Were like parents to the parents said foster mother Marie Coruzzi Usually the abusive parents have no friends or relatives to turn to when theyre frustrated with the hi tle things kids do she said The progam is longterm project said Ms Rogers Sometimes the parents no longer need our help or they may withdraw because they dont think they are getting anywhere No one can force them to get help The program is scheduled to be expanded in the fall from the current six cases and fishing rights on 5000 acres of Macomb State Park here and are buying private land nearby on which to live They also will have hunting and fishing rights on 700 acres of Minor Lake Dam State Park 20 miles north of here OFFICIALS DURIOUS Kakwirakeron said the In dians plan to purchase farm machinery and feed from local merchants bringing in sub stantial amount of money that will be spent in the area and itll he the economy Loca officials have not been enthusiastic about the project saying they are concerned about adding to the countys school and welfare spending And some residents of the area have expressed fear the Indians might drain the areas econ omy Kakwirakeron said he is con vinced that once the whites in the area Ieam more about the Indians they will accept them Theyre just going on ster eotypes of people he said Weve been in Eagle Bay for three years and our eople have never been on we are Weve never received any money from the state county or federal gov ernments Most of our people who came here are steelworkers We were all earning good money Its all people who were successle in the white world that are here Its not group of misfits Kakwirakeron said the settle ment will be open to any tradi tional Indian people that want to live the lifestyle that were living suppose if this were an other place or another time New York state might have at tempted to resolve it through violence and force the Indian leader said But think this is tribute to them that theyve shown it can be done this way Lou Grumet spokesman for Secretary of State Mario Cuomo who negotiated the ac cord said he too is optimistic think the Indians are reasonable le and think the residents Clinton County are reasonable people and think the Indians are going to be good neighbors
