sEorts wheel Sugar Ray was best By ED HARPER Chay Perhaps the best fighter pound for pound to ever enter ring was Sugar Ray Robinson Named Sugar because of his sweet fighting style Robinson was 160 pound Muhammad Ali as adept at exciting people inside the ring as he was to attracting attention outside it In pro career that ran from 1940 to 1965 he compiled record of 175 victories 109 by knockout 19 losses and six draws Robinson was unbeaten as welterweight champion was middleweight champion five times and was winning the light heavyweight title from Joey Maxim in 1952 when he was knocked out by the extreme heat that took over the out come of the fight The temperature was in the nineties In ruling the welters and middleweights Robinson was king of what probably are boxings most exciting divisions in terms of combining finesse and power He was unbeatable in 33 the former and spectacular in the latter On the night of Sept 12 1951 Sugar Ray met Randy Tur pin in New Yorks Polo Grounds in an effort to regain the middleweight title Turpin had defeated Robinson for only the second defeat of his career two months earlier winning 15round deci sion in title bout in London England Robinsons mother who was watching from ringside yell ed Youve got to get him Ray as the fighters came out of some infighting and Robinson showed nasty gash over his left eye Realizing that the cut could cost him the fight Sugar launched frenzied attack right dropp Englishman and when Turpin arose Robinson unleashed flurry of punches that left him helpless against the ropes Ruby Goldstein the referee stopped the fight with eight seconds to go in the 10th round Robinson was once again the middleweight champion title he wasto give up four more times once voluntarily Sugar Ray won the 160 pound crown on Feb 14 1951 in hicago by pounding Jake La Motta helpless in 13 rounds In four previous over the weight matches Robinson who was then weltcr weight outpointed La Molta three times Robinson announced his retirement on Dec 18 1952 On Oct 20 1954 he announced his return to the ring He regained his title by knocking out Carl Bobo Olson on Dec 9th 1955 Later he fought two classic championship bouts against Gene Fullmer and Carmen Basilio winning one and losing one against each opponent For money and glamour the heavyweight division holds unique place in sports Its champions men such as Jack Johnson Jack Dempsey Joe Louis Rocky Marciano and the great Muhammad Ali are legend But the heavyweight division is only the tip of the boxing iceberg The foundation is the other divisions which have
