where we had 2t adults crying to get into our Hayfield centre We managed to eonvmce Queens Park that we needed help and were able to open second centre at one of the malls We now have over people who are actively involved HHIHIIAIIUN The Kiwanis were told that finding accommodation for the mentally retarded is problem Often they cant integrate fully into their own homes or in to society Sometimes they literally end up on the street Harrie has one group home with eight residents and the association is negotiating with the Ontario government for home to accommodate l2 more Some people might say Whats Booiit of so many but if we can help one of 2t weve accomplished lot Seymour said the problem of retardation in children often begins at birth or during pregnancy tiur program actually goes from the womb to the tomb Seymour says there are men tally retarded senior citizens in the area mostly in nursing homes These people need our help also EARLY ASSISTANCE Seymour believes many of the people who are in iiistitii trons such as the lluronia Regional at trillia otild have avoided the institutions it help had been giyeu early If children are reached bet ween the ages of birth and two years old they can quite often in this world theres always room for one mare lUll Wilma not Call your Welcome Wagon Hostess now Phone 728646I or 7264454 be stimulated into living nor mal or nearnormal lives If lot of the adults at lluronia had had someone to work with them and their parents when they were small Im sure you would find good percentage could have developed normally The Barrie Association has established family support service which aids families in learning to cope with the pro blems of having mentally retarded member onetofour ratio has been established in the twoyearold program now being operated by the Barrie association The children receive three hours of assistance day during the halfday program with the help of to volunteers The satisfaction and ap preciation of the parents of these children to the people of Barrie is tremendous Seymour said SIIIII RIGHT These twoandltup children can stay in the nursery until the ageof five We run into gap here Seymour explained At the age of live there is no place for them to go except to Portage View School where they must be accepted If they are not then what do we do with them We are fighting for pro gram for this age group so we may help to give them the human and spiritual rights we are all entitled to Seymour said retarded children will no longer have to wait to be accepted They will have right to school FA BRICLAND funding have talked to groups across Canada on International Aid and have heard all the arguments Lets look after our problems at home first is one of the more common He said this is where the men stand out from the boys If we can look beyond our own pro blems to see the overall need we are getting somewhere Charity begins at borne but it doesnt need tostay there lNITEIAPIEI Seymour says he realizes how people feel who are already paying taxes and then are ask ed to give to the United Appeal Here in Barrie we are very appreciative of the tnited Ap peal because government can not meet all our costs This year we are asking for 332000 know most people are already paying taxes but when you look at the work being done and how the principles of such clubs as the Kiwanis are being kept alive it all seems worth it There is problem out there in our community which touches us all in one way or another and we must help It is our obligation and our privilege to provide human and spiritual private readingimprovement program disagree with your advice to the 17yearold son of collegecducaied parents who wan ted to learn cabinetmaking in vocational school instead of following his parents wishes for him to go to college You told him to get two years of college because it would make him better cabinetmaker and more confident and sophisticated person How can he be better cabinetmaker without practicing cabinetmaking How can be be more confident person without achieving success in the thing IIE wants to do And as for sophistication whatever that means how will it give him the selffulfillment he seems to be searching for Perhaps better advice would be Learn the trade you think will make you happy but see if you can learn it at junior college instead of vocational school Besides your shop courses take one or two classes in art business ac counting or some other liberal arts area In this way you not only give your parents some hope which may keep them off your back but you also prepare yourself to open your own shop and enter some other field if and when you get your fill of cabinetmaking You are going to hear plenty from your readers about that lousy answer you gaveso get ready to defend yourself or reverse your stand1H Dear BF You are right was wrong Im not going to attempt to defend myself The answer was bummer and more than 1000 people wrote to tell me so Their letters expressed sentiments ranging from Please rethink your advice to You gotta be living in cave Dont you know the college scene has changed Its no longer place where kids can hide out and postpone their entrance into the real world Nobody should consider college unless he wants very much to go and knows precisely what he is doing there So Ill take 20lashes with the wet noodle and call
