their way into Queens Park Monday to watch the Molsons ProStars play the Senior Soft ball League allstars in game to raise money for charity But as usual when the Entertainer Eddie Shack makes the scene it was anything but serious ball game The teams battled to 1212 tie but the allstars left little doubt that if it had been regular ball game they could have run up high score We got together and made sure that neither team would get too serious if the score got out of hand ProStar coach Ross Brewitt said after the game The Barrie ball players were great putting up with some of the antics of our team especially Shack The Pro Stars were missing one of their top men for the game George Ferguson their top pitcher couldnt make the trip because his wife was in the hospital and he had to stay with her Joe Sgro handled the pit ching duties It would have been dif terent ball game if George had of been here Brewitt said He throws as good as anyone and it would have been three up and three down for most of the game Shack was all over the field cracking jokes and just being Eddie Shack He coached first base for awhile and made sure the all stars didnt throw anyone out by blacking the first bascmans path to the bag He took four bats to the plate but still couldnt hit all starpitcher Don McFaddens slow ball and then when he finally managed to knock ball into the outfield he ran from first to third and then stole second base It was serious game for about the first three innings and the allstars ran up 3e lead on the strength of Leo spa City soccer club Belcourts pitching and three run homer by Dietrich Gyetko of Church Homes but after that it was clear to everyone the all stars let up and the Pro Stars finally started to get some hits lan Turnbull didnt help the ProStars with his play at first base He dropped three toutine throws from his infielders and finally just threw his glove into the crowd Wayne Thomas and Brian Glennie stroked back to back home runs for the ProStars in the fourth inning Thomas was an inside the park blast that eluded the allstar outfielders and cut the allstar lead to 33 Jack Valiquette went to work in the fifth and sixth innings and hit two home runs His first was threerun shot and his other drive was grand slam that had no trouble finding its way over the centrefield fence and gave the ProStars short lived 116 lead after six innings The allstars came back with two runs in the seventh inning three in the eighth and added two more in the ninth inning but the lroStars tied the score in the bottom of the ninth inning on single by Bob icely and double by Dennis Dupere Valiquette and Gyetko were picked as the stars of the game The tie kept the ProStars record undefeated this season Sailier they picked up wins over the Buffalo Sabres and Hamilton Softball team Hey its point on the road said Leafs lim McKeir ny who is growing beard iii the offseason for the second straight year Dale Tallon of the Chicago Black Hawks showed just what the lrovStars are made of when he went into right field to take over for Shack with cast on his hand and made three fine catches had an operation couple of weeks ago but still wanted to come out with the team and have some fun Tallon said The injury happened midway but through last season thought it would heat by itself without an operation Brewitt was happy with the work the Barrie service clubs did to organize the event and thought there was an excellent crowd on hand think the people here did an excellent job organizing the game because they only had about 10 days to do it Brewitt said The money we help raise is just fantastic and it the guys going because thats why they are doing this sort of thing The more money they raise the hap pier they are The showing of the service clubs here really makes me happy and for that reason would like to come back and play again he said The only thing wrong with the game was that it lasted too long We usually start at 730 pm Even Wendy Sittler Darryls wife came down and asked me when the game was going to be over Sittler was the main target for the autograph seekers after the game and finally managed to get into the dressing room about half an hour after the ga me ended Molsons representatiVe Rob llattray was happy with the number of people who showed up on short not ice was really happy with the crowd he said The people in Barrie are really great this way and they will come out to something like this to help raise money for charity and thats great Gary Calvert manager of the allstars echoed llattrays thoughts on the game it was really lot more peo ple than anticipated he said it was real good ball game with bit of everything but dont think there was any doubt we could have beat them pretty good if we had to
