the examiner Saturday June 25 1977 preventative dental program has been going on at Prince of Wales School during the school year Not all of the students took part but those who did and were successful at it received awards from Diane Thompson dental assrstant Mr and Mrs Alan Richardson By PAT GUERGIS Examiner Staff Reporter The kids take more pride in themselves Teacher Bob Tomlin teacher at Prince of Wales School in Barrie says the preventive dental program which ran at the school during the past school year gave the children sense of pride They looked on themselves more as adults it seems like an adult thing to do Diane Thompson of the Sim coe County Health Unit started the program This is the first time it has been done on long term basis This time it was for three months but we hope to carry on next year for the whole year TEACHER HELP Thompson said the program would not have been half as successful as it was without the complete help and backing of the teachers involved The two teachers who as sisted were Tomlin and Mrs Pickles who teaches junior level Each morning at am the teachers encouraged the with Simcoe County Health Unit Left front Danny Corcorn Richard Therrian Danny McGibbon and George Moore Back Christine Windum Steve Thompkins Diane Thomp kins dental assistant Bev Benano Nancy Ricketts and children to brush their teeth and flos them as well This was repeated after lunch Dental program fosters pride The children were shown films brush ins were held and lessons on proper dental health and nutrition were given Mrs Pickles said she noticed difference in what the children were bringing for lunch There were fewer candies less pop and more fruit and vegetables STUDENTS CARE The program began because of so many cavities spotted dur ing routine examination Tomlin said the kids really took responsible interest in the program Once in while if forgot to remind them to brush they would remind me If we ever had to miss due to an assembly at am or something else they would mention it when we got back to the room When we started it took us about 10 minutes to get through the routine now it only takes three Disclosing tablets were used to detect any residue left on the teeth When Miss Thompson came in the morning the children would chew tablet she would check their teeth anc mark them accordingly If there was pinkish color which meant there was plague on the teeth the children would go out brush and come back to get re marked This was done once week and sometimes twice Why is this program not done in all the schools in Simcoe County It just sort of took off at Prince of Wales Both the children and the teachers show ed such great interest that it was easy to maintain As it stands now there is just not enough time or staff to ruin similiar programs in other schools Hopefully this can be changed and more children can benefit Thompson said awards were given out at Monsignor Clair school rencently to class where the teacher had been keeping charts on her own visited often but not on regular basis The children were shown films as well but most of the credit goes to the teacher If teacher is really interested the program works well Cowper Photo RichardsonWilson Collier Street United Church Barrie was the scene May 21 when Deborah Marie Wilson and Alan Wayne Richardson of Barrie were married Rev William Fritz instead of hurricane if were more graceful or at least little better coordinated Please dont send me to ballet school just tell me how to develop poise at home Klutzy Cami Age 19 Dear Carol Most klutziness is the result of hurrying and being absentmindedno concentration on what one is doing Slow down and make conscious effort to do every small thing as gracefully as possible Youre bound to see an im provement Lovey Can it be that you are subconsciously klutzing it up little to call attention to yourself Some people would rather be laughed at then ignored Think of these things Dear Ann Landers continuing family problem prompts my first letter to your column regarding the writer from Philadelphia who keeps sending gifts and cheques and receives no thanks or acknowledgements from nieces and nephews Out of family of four children we have 12yearold boy can sit down and guide him through the thank yous no problem an 18yearold girl who responds warmly and pro mptly without prodding 22yearold who responds warm ly but not promptly and 20yearold son who stubbome refuses to write thankyou note no matter how beg or plead and try to shame him into it When see relative who has sent gift to this impossible boy make some feeble attempt to apologize It goes again st my grain but feel must say something If you have solution to the problem would love to hear it In the meantime resent the accusation that did not raise him prgierly He knows what to do He just wont do its not Guilty in Endwell Dear Not Guilty Can it be that your myearold clod refuses to acknowledge gifts because he likes to bug you suggest the following When gift for him arrives phone the sendertell him or her it was lovely thoughtful gesture Also say Unfortunately the young man is remiss when it comes to acknowledging gifts and this of course distresses me Please dont send him another gift ever again if he fails to say thank you for this one as his mother would con sider it great favor Dear Ann Landers friend of mine is married to the youngest son of large family Her husband Ferdinand has five brothers all older Their wives seem to produce nothing but girls At last count Ferdinand and Cheryl had 17 nieces Cheryl became pregnant recently She is determined to have boy and has been eating herbs and root food carrots turnips and beets like mad Her grandmother says this will produce male child True or false Big Dear The sex of child is determined at the moment of conception Whatever she is carrying has already been decided Hair up without fear The quickest way know to be by myself is to walk out of beauty shop Here ammy hair halo of sprayed confection per fectly coiffed and immune to the wind At the peak of my wonderfulness the streets look like the quiet be ore an am bush There are no signs or sounds of human activity all forms of transportation have ceased The wind rustles though the emptiness that goes with being alone Let me step outside the house with curlers and its like an episode out of This Is Your Life Old girlfriends of my husbands appear like apparitions and say So youre Erma New neighbors introduce them selves and make quick exit saying Well call you Were not in the book My husband appears during his working hours with cam era and the kids to take the picture for our Christmas card boy who was quite serious about me in high school recog nizes me and looks relieved when tell him found someone else The minister drops by to bless the houseand and ev erything in it My sons teacher appears to talk with me about his grubby appearance and then thinks better of it The Avon Lady makes an appointment for an estimate For the last 30 years or so have been searching for that magic moment when you can put your hair up without fear of being discovered There is no such time remember the first time my husband came home and saw me frosting my hair was standing over the stove wearing bathing cap with strands of hair pulled through that had been stripped white and were standing straight out from my head He steadied himself against the door Dont tell me Youve just heard were being audited Dont be cute said Im frosting my hair Well stop it Youre scaring the children half to death tried putting my hair up at night only to discover that being sex symbol will never replace sleep For awhile attempted to cover it whenI went out doors which is like trying to sli cover the Eiffel Tower After awhile resort to spot curlingputting up only the parts of my hair that slept on With one fuzzy side corks crewed to the side of my head and the other hanging loosely looked like had been built from spare parts As was drying my hair with the sweeper attachment the other night before dinner my neighbor said Did you ever hear the joke about the bride who appeared at her own wed ding with her hair in brush rollers under her veil When someone asked why her hair was up she said Ed and might go someplace later on Idont get it Polly pointers Lg of appliances DEAR POLLY have number of small appliances such as toaster percolators waffle irons etc that have been replaced by new ones as they did not work hate to throw them away and would like to give them to some electrician who would repair and make use of them but do not know how to locate one Others must have the same problem so what can we do with them THRIFTY DEAR THRIFIY suggest that you call the Goodwill Salvation Army St Vincent de Paul Society or some other organization that likes to have such items for their workers perhaps the handicapped to repair Then they are sold or given away as the case may be to those who may really need them POLLY DEAR POLLY Recently someone at hostessing group meeting mentioned that it is always so hard to remove the first piece of anything made in square or rectangular pan They seemed quite happy with my suggestion which was to remove the second piece first It really works likea charm and hope the other readers like it too DEAR POLLY want to tell Vonnie what did with lot of marbles filled large glass kerosene container and an old twoquart canning jar with my marbles and made them into lamps by using lamp kits such as one can buy at hardware stores The lamps are very heavy so ideal for porches dens etc and quite colorful too also use marbles as coverup around spiked flower holders when making low based arrangements ELSIE DEAR POLLY In order to conserve both energy and water leave my teakettle over the pilot light on the stove so there is always warm water to start something cooking to wash my face or hands etc When only small amount of warm water is needed it isgllready and do not have to keep running water from the tap imttl it is waim Mrs CRC
