Torborg sovors 4th straight win over Jays TORONTO CP Things are getting bit monotonous for Cleveland Indians manager Jeff Torborg but he isnt com plaining hope this monotony keeps up he said Thursday night af ter the Indians blanked Toronto Blue Jays 40 on Wayne Garlands fourhitter for their eighth consecutive victory and sixth in row since Torborg took over as skipper of the American League team What can say said the manager who assumed his present duties last Sunday with the dismissal of Frank Robin son He had opened the season as the Indians bullpen coach imagine were going to lose some of this enthusiasm eventually but Im going to savor it as long as Ican Torborg refuses to take any of the credit for the Cleveland tumabout which has seen the club move back into contention in the AL East 72 games be hind the frontrunning Boston Red Sox havent thrown ball or swung bat Torborg said in downplaying his contribution to the Cleveland resurgence However several of the In dians players think differently including Garland who hand cuffed the Blue Jays and didnt allow ball out of the infield until the last out of the fourth when Ron Fairly lofted fly ball to left field Toronto drop ping its 10th game in its last 11 starts went hitless until Doug Rader and Sam Ewing collec ted backtoback singles to open the fifth think the change of man agers has had positive affect on menot that didnt get along with Frank Robinson said Garland who improved his record to 47 But Jeff is for mer catcher and understands me as pitcher better It was the second complete game win in row for Garland who walked only two batters and fanned onethe final To ronto batter Toronto starter Jesse Jeffer son 37 also went the distance walking foul and striking out four Buddy Bell and Rico Carty were the hitting stars for the In dians Bell hit his sixth home run of the season in the fourth with man on to give Cleveland threerun lead and Carty followed in the sixth with his third homera solo shot which cleared the left field fence 350 feet away The Indians scored first in the opening inning as Jim Norriss opposite field double scored Duane Kuiper who had led off the game with single The only threat the Blue Jays could muster came in the fifth After the Rader and Ewing sin gles Alan Ashby drew twoout walk However Cleveland shor tstop Frank Duffy made diving stop of John Scotts ground ball and tossed to sec ond for the force on Ashby to end the inning The game played before 16 747 spectators at Exhibition Stadium took one hour and 47 minutes to complete baseball By THE CANADIAN PRESS First you see the members of the National Hockey Leagues board of governors stinking into the main ballroom of hotel surrounded by this citys airport Then the members of the NHL Players Association glide into the same room ready to listen to any counter proposals their bosses may have to their proposals on new collective bargaining agreement They talked and talked Thursday yet nothing was accom plished between the parties towards revision of the collective bargaining agreement or possible merger with the World Hockey Association And somewhere out in Las Vegas Nev was Jack Kent Cooke owner of Los Angeles Kings who perhaps knew that he is the main reason nothing was accomplished in the first day of the ownerplayer council meetings Right now the vote is 17 to on equalization and any change in the collective bargaining agreement said Alan Eagleson the executive director of the NHL players group think they are taking the position the dissenting club that any change in the collective bargaining agreement requires unanimous vote and they are hanging their hat on that They are not deciding whether expansion needs that vote or not The NHL constitution says that threequarters vote is suf ficient for expansion N0 COMMENT When asked what was happening John Ziegler Jr the president elect managed to add to his everincreasing number of no comment or its too early to say answers That one vote is against everything said Eagleson BARRIE APPLIANCES In SYLVANIA COLOR TELEVISION FOR AS Low AS $39900 This is an 18 solid state color portable featuring the GTMotic color tuning system with Huronia Rotary Club think if they can keep the vote of the other 17 they can resolve the 18th vote think their biggest problem right now might be with the WHA The players association told the owners that ideally there should be no more than 20 teams operating in the NHL even with an accommodation of existing WHA franchises It is not that the NHL players body would oppose any more than 20 teams but from the fans point of view 24 teams is too many clubs Eagleson said We would have to know all of the financial implications We would have to find out what would happen with the franchise purchase money if any On Thursday the NHL governors examined and discussed the proposals put forward by the players association BARRIE DENTURE CLINIC COLELLA DT Complete Denture Service 7264721 l49A Dunlop St
