County sgorts Coach confident Ivy chances good By BILL lRRAN Rival clubs would be making serious mistake if they un derrate the Ivy Leafs in the current county league baseball race according to veteran catcher and coach George Ellis Were out to try to win again if we can answered George promptly when asked what he thought about the Leafs prospects recently Reminded that it was five years since Ivy captured the county laurels he smiled broadly as he added Its about time for us to win again We came close several times in bet ween Although pitcher Don Shannon has retired some of the stars of Ivys championship 1972 club are still going strong Coach Ellis himself was team captain that eventful year when Ivy beat out the rillia Majors four games to three in hardfought exciting final series Shortstop Bob Burns secondssacker Tom Arnold out fielder pitcher Bill Patton first sacker Corky Wilson out fielder Eddie latton pitcher Don McMaster outfielder pitcher Allan Ellis and of course Monty Elliott himself were other stalwarts of that fine club still in there battling for another winner for Ivy Bob Doner who was pitching for his home town Alliston club in 1972 has been performing for the Leafs for several years Allan Elliott catches for the club except when George Ellis takes over Dave Scalon has developed into an outfielder with hitting ability and Wayne Rowe and John Glass are others coming along Brian Reid is capable infielder and southpaw Jerry Falls helps out on the mound John Walton has been playing well at first base Although late starter Don McMaster should be regaining his oldtime pitching form before long The speed ball and curve artist has rande with the better pitchers in the league for some years LEAFS IO COMPETE IN OBA SERIES Besides seeking county honors Ivy also has entered the OBA and will be seeking provincial laurels again Vic llaywood who announces Ivy home games and keeps the statistics for the league recalled Ivys 1966 team which won the intermediate OBA title We beat out Wilkesport in the finals that year reported Vic noting that pitchercoach Wilf Shewell is still among en thusiastic supporters of the club Old records show Gary Maw Monty Elliott and Allan Ellis did themain mound duty for the Ivy champions that year along with coach Shewell himself George Ellis was behind the plate Bob Burns at short Tom Arnold at second and centre fielder Keith Money were among other stars of that standout Ivy team Davis Arnold now league president then headed county juvenile circuit with Don McMaster the star Ivy pitcher and Malcolm Wilson the slugging first sacker Coach Ellis said he wasnt certain what classification Ivy will be given by the DEA for the current club Orillia Majors have been entered in the senior OBA playdowns We just might be matched against Orillia in that series as well as in the county he commented with smile Well just have aminer Photo to wait and see LONGTIME IY BASEBALL BOOSTER An ardent baseball fan for years and booster of the Ivy Leafs Herman Jennctt pitched for Ivy rural senior cham pions away back in 1922 To win out the star southpaw hurler who also pitched for Barrie teams in the old Georgian Bay league when in his prime had to outduel Hector Lefty Goldsmith an out standing amateur pitcher of the 205 Hector was the moun dsman for the ThornburyClarksburg Combines and even today Herman concedes he was very fortunate in gaining the edge Goldsmith incidentally was rated with the famous Phil Marchildon of Penetanguishene although he never got the chance to prove it in pro Phil became one of the leading pit chers in the American league with Philadelphia Athletics before he retired His pitching would be great help to the Toronto Blue Iays today if he could flash his oldtime form EXTENDED ILAYOFF SERIES RECALLED Back 10 years ago when Davis Arnold piloted the team the Leafs and Thornton battled through 10 games before deciding the south sect ion winners of the county league Thys Schaly was going strong on the mound for the Leafs at the time and other pitching stars of the team who turned in stellar performances were Gary Maw and Monty Elliott But two brilliant pitchers named Johnston gave Thornton the ultimate edge Allan Ellis and Terry Amold were finefielding pair at shortstop and second for Ivy and first sacker Joe Wilson also was outstanding Keith Money Ken Black and Cleve Patton were all good hitting outfieldch with the ever reliable George Ellis cat ching Don Johnston was considered the ace of the Thornton staff although Don Shannon was also coming along then Shannon later was standout in pitching Ivy to the 1972 county league championship with capable mound help from Don McMaster Thornton won the Molson trophy in the eightclub Angus baseball tournament to years ago when catcher Bill Laycock led the offensive Don Johnston outpitched Iaul Feehely John Craystone and Kerry Worrod as Thornton took the final from Tot tenham 10 to In the semifinal John Johnston shaded John Gould to as Thornton shaded Beeton Incidentally baseball tournaments were held annually at Angus during the period with Harry Major chairman in charge Orillia Majors led by Nick Owen and Pat Hennessy former Barrie players eventually beat out Thornton for the county championship that year And Lisle captured the SimcoeDufferin baseball league title taking Clarksburg four straight in the finals Sonto holds off late surge to win race Santa held off late surge by Dream Time to win the $3000 lainting Handicap feature race at Barrie Race way Friday The
