nothing like they will face in four preseason games The first of those games is tonight when the Western Foot ball Conference Bombers meet Montreal Alouettes in game that will give coaches Bud Ri ley of Winnipeg and Merv Levy of Montreal their first look at many players under game con ditions Some players arent pre pared for the rude awakening that awaits them in actual game conditions said Riley The Winnipeg coach reduced his roster to the required 50 players Monday but that in cludes four players on crut chesveteran Chuck Liebrock and newcomers Gary Shugrue Steve Sully and Bill Bowerman As well veteran defensive tackle Dave Knechtel and de fensive back Peter Ribbins an nounced their retirements but both are expected back later in the season Its been rather difficult to make cuts with all the injuries we have Riley said of the sit uation Our rookie linemen were going to get thorough looksec in the exhibition game anyway Now theyll really be under the gun The spots are there for the taking though so it should be in teresting Hopefully they will succeed But against Montreal with the excellent defensive line they have some might get turned around few times It can getpretty disheartening but thats how to learn TWO MAIN PROBLEMS Rileys main problems have been finding replacement for the retired Bill Frank at offen sive tackle and finding more speed at wide receiver The speed problem appears to be solved by import rookies Mike Washington and Joey Walters But no one seemed able to adequately fill Franks spot so Riley has shifted allstar guard Buddy Brown to tackle and now is looking at two rookies at the guard positions If we started the regular season tomorrow wed line up with Bob Swift at centre Buddy Brown and Butch Norman at the tackle spots and Gary Krahn and Darryl Craig at the guards said offensive line coach Jim Erkenbeck whos looking forward to tonights game Argos tie Ottawa in exhibition play OTTAWA CP Ottawa Rough Riders and Toronto Ar gonauts played
